Swimming lessons can help children as young as one year old, but parents should talk with their child\u2019s doctor to figure out the right time to start.<\/p>\n<p>In swim lessons, children should learn basic skills like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>getting into the water<\/li>\n<li>coming back up to the surface<\/li>\n<li>turning around<\/li>\n<li>swimming at least 25 yards<\/li>\n<li>floating or treading water<\/li>\n<li>getting out of the water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Swim lessons also teach kids how to help themselves if they fall in, or how to swim while wearing clothes or a life jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Even with lessons, swimming can still be risky. Cold water, weather, water depth, and currents can affect how well someone swims.<\/p>\n<p>Other water safety steps include having a fence around the pool, making sure drains are safe, and always watching children closely. These steps work together to help prevent drowning.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Find swimming lessons in your area:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/take-a-class\/swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Red Cross Swim Classes and Training<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ymca.org\/find-your-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YMCA &#8211; Find Your Y<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/usswimschools.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States Swim School Association (USSSA)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/parents\/learn-to-swim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Swimming &#8211; Learn to Swim\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In drowning situations, rescuers should focus on rescue breathing, clearing the airway, and calling 911 before beginning compressions.\u00a0If someone has drowned and is not breathing, the best thing a bystander can do is start CPR right away. CPR includes rescue breaths, chest compressions, and using an AED. An AED is a machine that can help restart the heart during a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10155 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920-1024x868.jpg\" alt=\"pay phone and AED\" width=\"640\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920-1024x868.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920-300x254.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920-768x651.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920-1536x1302.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2020\/05\/emergency-3016877_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In emergency situations, follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/content\/dam\/redcross\/Health-Safety-Services\/Aquatics\/chain-of-drowning-survival-17.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Cross\u2019s drowning chain of survival:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognize the signs of someone in trouble and shout for help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rescue and remove the person from the water, if it is possible to do so without putting yourself in danger.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point to one person and tell them to call 911. If alone, do two minutes of rescue breathing and CPR and then call 911.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin rescue breathing, then CPR.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use an AED if available and transfer care to EMS.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if rescue breaths are the only intervention that is needed for the victim to regain consciousness, the rescuer should call 911 and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">victim should be transported<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a hospital for further evaluation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>To learn CPR, ask at your local rescue squad or fire station, YMCA, Red Cross, or other community organizations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Lifeguards<\/h2>\n<p data-block-id=\"e07b9ced-9062-431e-9b58-0d5742f55475\" data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Stay safe! Listen to the lifeguard.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"ad001e98-818a-48c8-aefa-5a282bf6815d\">Lifeguards help prevent injuries, save lives, and respond to emergencies in the water.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"33e96bc5-c111-4af2-8f8a-fab15ddf5a4f\">Lifeguards should be trained by a national program, such as the American Red Cross or YMCA.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"8059d5dc-ec5b-4a45-900e-b1d71d2734ec\">Certified lifeguards know how to spot and respond to emergencies in the water and on land. They can help struggling swimmers and rescue drowning people.
