Biosolids are used as soil amendments and its use is regulated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deq.virginia.gov\/Programs\/Water\/LandApplicationBeneficialReuse\/SewageSludgeBiosolids.aspx\">Virginia Department of Environmental Quality<\/a> (DEQ).<\/p>\n<p><b>Why is the study being done?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8739\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/03\/Cover-image-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"165\" \/>In 2017 the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) completed a study of land application of biosolids and industrial residuals in Virginia.\u00a0 Specifically, they were asked to analyze the current scientific literature on potential effects on human health and the environment.\u00a0 JLARC found that the overall risk from land application is low under current state regulations.\u00a0 However, they recommended that VDH conduct a pilot epidemiological study of whether land application of biosolids causes human health problems.\u00a0 JLARC also recommended that VDH test biosolids for pathogens.\u00a0 For the full report click <a href=\"http:\/\/jlarc.virginia.gov\/2017-biosolids.asp\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the JLARC report, the Virginia General Assembly asked the Virginia Department of Health to conduct an epidemiological study to determine if the land application of biosolids affects the health of Virginians, as well as to test Virginia biosolids for pathogens, as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.lis.virginia.gov\/amendment\/2018\/2\/HB5002\/Introduced\/SE\/289\/1s\/\">HB 5002<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>What is an epidemiology study?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Epidemiology study is a method used by the health department to identify causes of health outcomes and diseases in populations. In epidemiology, surveys such as this are viewed collectively from multiple individuals to determine the overall health of the community.<\/p>\n<p><b>How are study participants selected?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Study participants for the epidemiological study have been randomly selected using addresses found in census data.\u00a0 Addresses that are identified to be close to a field where biosolids are permitted to be applied may receive a postcard in the mail with an invitation to participate in the study.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>Will your study show if biosolids make people sick?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Epidemiological studies can never prove causation. It can show if a risk factor (such a biosolids) is associated with a disease in the population.<\/p>\n<p><b>How will my identity be protected?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>No identifiable information will be collected in this survey.\u00a0 Your address will never be made public and is protected by law.\u00a0 Participation in the survey is anonymous.<\/p>\n<p><b>How will my response be used?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Your response will be combined with responses from others in Virginia that take the survey and put into a report to be submitted to the Virginia General Assembly January 2020.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8709\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8709 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/03\/gulle-3496995_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Wolfgang Ehrecke from Pixabay.
