Save the Dates! The 2017 Health Equity Summer Brown Bag Training Series

July 13th training July 27th training August 10th training August 24th training

Every Virginian deserves to live a healthy life. Virginia’s Plan for Well-Being is designed to do just that, by building a foundation for everyone to have a chance to live a healthy life. Different populations in Virginia have differing health outcomes, and it is our goal to understand why those differences exist and how to address them. Virginia’s Plan for Well-Being highlights specific goals that communities can focus on to achieve measureable improvements. VDH is complimenting this initiative by taking an exciting new direction with its Strategic Plan that includes a Population Health focus.

Most of you have attended the Introduction to Population Health Training which was designed to help employees develop a baseline understanding of a population health approach, identify opportunities for engaging with community leaders, and address underlying causes of health issues through various means.

We are now offering a summer training series that will expand on the population health training. This summer series will provide information to help you to answer key questions – why doesn’t everyone in Virginia have similar health outcomes? Why are there health inequities in Virginia? The trainings will explore how to address health disparities present in the Commonwealth. Since health begins where we live, learn, work, and play, and if we understand how these areas affect health outcomes, we can start to build a foundation for everyone to have a chance to live a healthy life.

Summer Brown Bag Series:

The Office of Health Equity is offering this special summer training series as a part of their annual Health Equity Training Series. The series will optimize the way we perform our duties at work by:
• Providing fundamental knowledge of how health is bigger than healthcare
• Understanding how our role is related to and impacted by VDH’s mission and vision
• Increasing our understanding of our role (in/directly patient, client, community, and partner/stakeholder) with population health as outlined in Virginia’s Plan for Well-Being for the attainment of health equity.

This highly informative and thought-provoking series is a must-see for all VDH employees
Attendees are welcome to bring their lunches!

This bi-monthly series will start on July 13, 2017, and will run through August 24, 2017. During the series, we will offer different tools that conceptualize the SDOH. We will view episodes from the acclaimed documentary Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? as well as a Ted Talk from renowned Public Health Professor Dr. David R. Williams.
If employees cannot dedicate the entire length of the trainings, they can choose to split their time by viewing a pre-screening of the tools before the training that is more accommodating to their schedules. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the week of the training, we will be offering screenings of the documentary at different times during the afternoon. Employees can select a screening that works best for their schedule, and then attend the discussion session the day of the training to be able to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of how this affects their role at VDH.

Below is the schedule for all of the trainings as well as the pre-training screening schedule:
