These fires cause more than $8.3 million per week in property loss. Children and adults over 65 are at a higher risk for dying in a fire than the rest of the population. Residents over 65 are almost 6 times more likely to die in a fire than the rest of the population.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fire Safety Tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smoke Alarms\n<ul>\n<li>Install smoke alarms on every level and in every sleeping area of your home.<\/li>\n<li>Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries every six months. (Refer to manufacturer\u2019s instructions.)<\/li>\n<li>Replace smoke alarms every ten years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Remove Fire Hazards\n<ul>\n<li>Keep matches, lighters, gasoline, and other flammable materials locked away, out of children\u2019s reach.<\/li>\n<li>Teach children to tell you when they find matches and lighters.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid dressing children for sleep in loosefitting, 100 percent cotton garments; e.g.,oversized t-shirts.<\/li>\n<li>Do not leave candles unattended and always keep candles away from flammable materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Design and Practice a Fire Escape Plan\n<ul>\n<li>Develop and practice a home fire escape plan and designate a meeting place outside.<\/li>\n<li>Plan your escape around your abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Choose a safe place to meet in front of the house or apartment building.<\/li>\n<li>Once safely outside the residence, call the fire department or 911.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate how to Stop, Drop, and Roll if clothes catch on fire.<\/li>\n<li>Teach children not to hide from firefighters; but to get out quickly and call for help from another location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Home Heating Safety\n<ul>\n<li>Regularly clean all types of home heating equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Place space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything combustible or flammable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cooking Safety<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Keep a working fire extinguisher within reach in the kitchen.<\/li>\n<li>Keep children away from cooking appliances.<\/li>\n<li>Treat surface burns by placing them in cool water for 10-15 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/179\/2019\/11\/Fire-Safety.pdf\">Download the printable Fire Safety tip card<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To learn more about our initiatives and partners, click&nbsp;here.
