Understanding and preventing child deaths are responsibilities shared by the community and the agencies that serve that community. Local and regional child fatality review teams allow a community to assess and address the unique issues that surround the deaths of their children and develop appropriate prevention strategies for their communities. Virginia currently has five regional child fatality review teams.

In 2011, the Virginia Board of Social Services established regional child fatality review teams in all five Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) regions. Four of these teams were new, as the Eastern region has had a team for over 20 years. These regional teams review all child deaths that were investigated by a local department of social services for suspicions of abuse and/or neglect.
