{"id":46,"date":"2016-04-21T16:34:54","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T16:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/?page_id=46"},"modified":"2024-02-05T15:02:16","modified_gmt":"2024-02-05T15:02:16","slug":"division-of-death-prevention","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/division-of-death-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Division of Death Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"Content_Secondary\">\n<p>Although the medical examiner\u2019s office main responsibility is to determine the cause and manner of certain deaths, it also hosts various surveillance projects and fatality review teams within the Division of Death Prevention.\u00a0 These programs examine patterns, trends, and factors leading up to certain types of death with the aim of identifying needed changes in services.\u00a0 Each project produces reports to inform policy makers and citizens about issues vital to a society concerned with public health and safety.\u00a0 These programs are evidence that the dead can indeed help the living.<\/p>\n<h2>Surveillance<\/h2>\n<p>The public health definition of surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data regarding health events of interest.\u00a0 The surveillance programs within the medical examiner\u2019s office work to identify those Virginians most at risk for sudden or violent death.\u00a0 These projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"ctl00_MainContentPlaceHolder_DisplayTicketView_Details\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/virginia-pregnancy-associated-mortality-surveillance-system-pamss\/\"><strong>Virginia Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Surveillance System (PAMSS)<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/office-of-chief-medical-examiner\/virginia-violent-death-reporting-system\/\">The Virginia Violent Death Reporting System<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/the-sudden-death-in-the-young-sdy-case-registry\/\"><strong>Sudden Death in the Young Case Registry<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/medical-examiner\/fatality-review-surveillance-programs-reports\/infant-and-child-mortality-surveillance-system\/\">Infant and Child Mortality Surveillance System<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Fatality Review<\/h2>\n<p>Fatality review is a theory and method grounded in public health, designed to identify and understand risk factors for death.\u00a0 It involves examination of relevant records relating to the decedent by a multidisciplinary team of professionals.\u00a0 \u00a0The purpose is to improve understanding of how and why people die and to make recommendations for education, training, and prevention efforts.
