New World screwworm (NWS) is a fly that lays its eggs in wounds or body openings such as the eyes, ears, nose,\u00a0<\/span>and mouth<\/span>. The eggs hatch into\u00a0<\/span>maggots (<\/span>par<\/span>a<\/span>sitic larvae<\/span>)<\/span>. The maggots<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>burrow into and\u00a0<\/span>feed on\u00a0<\/span>living\u00a0<\/span>tissue or flesh<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>NWS primarily affects livestock, but it can also occur in companion animals, wildlife, and people.\u00a0<\/span>NWS is not\u00a0<\/span>contagious.<\/span>\u00a0It does not\u00a0<\/span>spread directly from<\/span>\u00a0animal to\u00a0<\/span>animal,\u00a0<\/span>animal<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>person<\/span>, or\u00a0<\/span>person to person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
