(Charlottesville, Va.) – To help provide easy access to important vital records that document life events, local health departments in the Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD) have expanded services from providing just death certificates to now also providing certified copies of birth, marriage, and divorce certificates.

Birth, marriage, and divorce certificates are available at all local health departments if the event occurred in Virginia. Death certificates can be filed, and certified copies can be obtained, at any health department in Virginia, regardless of where the death occurred. If it is less than 30 days since the filing of the death, people can only get a copy of the death certificate from the city/county where it was originally filed.

Only immediate family members (mother, father, current spouse, child, sibling, or grandparents) can obtain certificate copies and they must provide valid identification. Legal guardians must provide custody papers in order to get a certificate. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, former spouses, etc. cannot get any copies.

“The process for getting certificate copies at your local health department is very quick and easy!” said Teresa Batten, TJHD Office Support Supervisor. “There is a simple one-page application that people can complete at the health department, or in advance, to request the certificate. Our friendly staff are here to help provide certified copies of the certificates with very little wait time.”

Each certificate and/or search of a vital record is $12.00. Certified copies can be obtained at the following:
