LENOWISCO and Cumberland Plateau Health Districts Offering Moderna and J&J Booster COVID-19 Vaccines

(WISE, Va.) –Beginning October 25, both the LENOWISCO Health District and Cumberland Plateau Health District will now be offering COVID-19 booster doses of Moderna and J&J in addition to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Per CDC recommendations a single COVID-19 booster dose can be administered at least 6 months after completion of the mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) primary series to certain populations:

For individuals who received the primary Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the CDC recommends a single COVID-19 vaccine booster dose that can be administered to all individuals 18 years of age and older at least 2 months after their J&J primary dose.

“We are excited to begin the administration of booster doses for both the Moderna and J&J vaccine,” said Allie Phillips, population health manager. “Both the Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau Health Districts have been working continually with community partners, pharmacies, and health care providers to prepare for the rollout of boosters. This will help us to not only reach more individuals but also provides us with the opportunity to continue to help keep our communities safe and healthy.”

CDC’s recommendations now allow for booster doses to be “mixed and matched.” This means that individuals who received a primary series of Pfizer-BioNTech may receive a Moderna booster and vice versa. “Furthermore this allowance gives individuals the power to choose which vaccine they would like to receive for their booster. However, if an individual wishes to receive a different type booster vaccine than what they received in their primary series, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor or healthcare provider first in order to help make the best decision for you,” Phillips continued.

The Lenowisco Health District and Cumberland Plateau Health District will be offering all three booster vaccines in their local health department offices by appointment only.
