(Richmond, Va.) – The Richmond City Health District (RCHD) is pleased to announce that Tracey Avery – Geter, RN, FNP, has been selected as the Virginia Department of Health’s Central Region Public Health Nurse of the Year. Her award recognizes the outstanding work public health nurses make toward the health of all Virginians.

“We are proud to recognize Tracey as both the district and regional Nurse of the Year,” said Dr. Donald Stern, Richmond City Health District director. “It’s an honor for both Tracey and the Richmond City Health District.”

RCHD Nurse Manager Senior Sherry Shrader said, “Tracey demonstrates the highest level of professionalism and actively role models delivering quality and innovation in health care on a daily basis.”

“Tracey has demonstrated impeccable integrity and has a myriad of achievements,” added Dr. Sudola Adekoya, lead physician for RCHD.

Since joining RCHD in 2008, Avery-Geter has been instrumental in implementing a Centering model of care for prenatal patients as well as developing and implementing an electronic Medication Tracking System for the health district.

Tracey’s commitment to her community is evident by her devotion to the Girl Scout Troop she has led for the last four years. As troop leader, her focus has been on building courage, confidence and character in the young girls in her troop. She also has served as a volunteer in the children’s ministry in her church, the Village of Faith Ministries, and is a regular volunteer in her daughter’s school. She is also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a public service sorority.

This annual award takes place during the celebration of National Nurses Week, which always begins May 6 and ends May 12, the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern professional nursing.
