(Winchester, Va.) — Hepatitis A is a serious infection of the liver that can be prevented by a vaccine. Lord Fairfax Health District provides Hepatitis A vaccine at all five of its clinic locations. Patients can walk-in, without an appointment during business hours to receive the vaccine. Although we do bill insurance, the vaccine is offered at no cost to the patient.
- What is Hepatitis A and How is it Spread? Hepatitis A is caused by a virus, spread by contamination of food, hands, and surfaces with infected feces (stool), which is then orally ingested by the next victim. You can limit spread by good hygiene and handwashing, but you can prevent infection with a single vaccine.
- Who is at Risk? High-risk groups include injection drug users, the homeless, close or household contacts of people with hepatitis A and men who have sex with men (MSM).
- How to Get Vaccinated: Walk into your local health department between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, for consultation and to receive the vaccine.
“The Lord Fairfax Health Department particularly encourages individuals in high risk groups to come to their local Health Department for immunization,” says Lord Fairfax Health District Director Dr. Colin Greene, “but others seeking protection may receive consultation for vaccination as well.”
Additional information on Hepatitis A is available from the Virginia Department of Health at www.vdh.virginia.gov/epidemiology/epidemiology-fact-sheets/hepatitis-a/.
