Virginia Health Officials Investigating Potential Measles Exposures in Central Virginia
Central Virginia Health Districts Are Working Together to Identify People Who Are at Risk
(Henrico and Chesterfield, Va.)— Out of an abundance of caution, Health Districts in central Virginia are informing people who were at various locations listed below during the specified time frames that they may have been exposed to a person with measles. Central Virginia area health officials are mounting a coordinated effort to identify people who may have been exposed. Listed below are the dates, times, and locations of the potential exposure sites associated with the confirmed case of measles:

    • Richmond International Airport, 1 Richard E Byrd Terminal Dr, Richmond, VA 23250, Tuesday, December 17 from 9:00 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.  Of note, the individual did not pick up bags in baggage claim and proceeded directly to a private vehicle at curbside for transport.
    • Health Visions MD, 1230 Alverser Dr Suite 100, Midlothian, VA 23113, Thursday, December 19 from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

LORD FAIRFAX HEALTH DISTRICT WARNS RESIDENTS OF RABIES RISK IN BATS
Health Department Offers Tips to Stay Safe

(Winchester, Va.) — On several occasions starting on November 24, 2019, residents of a rural property in Warren County encountered bats inside their house.  Since that time, three of these bats were captured and two of them tested positive for the rabies virus. “Any physical encounter with a bat—a bite, scratch, or lick, a collision with a flying bat, or even finding a bat in a room with a sleeping person—should be considered a rabies exposure,” stated Lord Fairfax Health District Director Dr. Colin Greene, “and anyone so exposed should seek medical attention immediately.” more>>

(BRISTOL, Va.) – The Mount Rogers Health District reports that an employee at Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, located at 1003 Old Airport Rd. in Bristol, Virginia, has been diagnosed with hepatitis A. As a result, persons who ate there on November 16 or 17, 2019 may have been exposed to hepatitis A. more>>

NEW RIVER HEALTH DISTRICT OFFERS FREE SEASONAL FLU VACCINE IN ALL LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS
(CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia) – This Thursday and Friday, the New River Health District will offer free seasonal flu vaccine in a series of walk-in clinics at each local health department office. Vaccine will be available free to anyone 18 years and older on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to wear clothing that is loose around the arm so that a public health nurse can administer the flu shot in the upper arm. more>>

HEALTH OFFICIALS ADVISE RESIDENTS OF INCREASE IN PERTUSSIS CASES IN THE CENTRAL SHENANDOAH AREA
(STAUNTON, Va.) – The Waynesboro-Augusta Health Department and the Staunton-Augusta Health Department are informing residents of an increase in the number of reported pertussis cases among area residents.  Since October 25, the departments have investigated a total of 23 reports of pertussis in children, teens and adults.  From 2016 through 2018, Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro together had an average of three pertussis cases per year. more>>

Prince William Health District Adjusts Services
Some Services will Have Reduced Hours
(Manassas, Va.) – The Prince William Health District (PWHD) is reducing the delivery of some of its services and consolidating most of them at the Woodbridge Clinic. These actions are a result of a shortage of nurses and continued inability to fill many nursing staff positions.
“In the past few years, the health district has lost many of its nurses to retirement, relocation or to other jobs in the northern Virginia or D.C. area,” said Prince William Health District Director Dr. Alison Ansher, “We have been unable to fill positions, despite repeated efforts.” more>>

(Winchester, Va.) On Oct. 23, 2019, two separate encounters occurred in Frederick County with animals later testing positive for rabies. The first was a skunk involved in an altercation with a dog near Chapel Rd (Route 627) and Sapling Lane, northwest of Middletown near the community of Marlboro. The second was a raccoon found in a shed off of Back Mountain Road (Route 600), near the eastern entrance to Shawneeland. Both animals were euthanized and later tested positive for rabies, according to the Lord Fairfax Health District. more>>

Harmful Algae Bloom Advisory Lifted for Wilcox Lake in Petersburg
HAB Task Force Sampling to Resume in May 2020
The public is advised to be aware of signs of a harmful algae bloom and avoid contact if there is the presence of scum.
(Richmond, Va.) – The swimming advisory for Wilcox Lake has been lifted based on samples collected October 3, which were within safe swimming levels for cyanobacteria and toxins. Algae blooms can occur when warm water and nutrients combine to make conditions favorable for algae growth. Most algae species are harmless; however, some species (called “cyanobacteria”) may produce irritating compounds or toxins that may cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. more>>

Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Advises Residents of Increase in Pertussis Cases in the Community
(Warrenton, Va.) The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District (RRHD) is informing Fauquier residents of a recent spike in reported pertussis (commonly referred to as whooping cough) cases among Fauquier children. Since mid-September, the RRHD has investigated a total of 25 reports of pertussis illness in children with ages ranging from under 1 to 17 years. Last year there were 10 cases reported in the five-county health district. more>>

New River Health District Offers Free Seasonal Flu Vaccine at Pulaski YMCA Wednesday, November 6
(CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia) – The New River Health District will offer free seasonal flu vaccine on Wednesday, November 6 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Pulaski YMCA, 615 Oakhurst Ave. in Pulaski. Vaccine will be available free to anyone 18 years and older on a first-come, first-served basis. (A total of 150 doses is available.) Lord Fairfax Health District Advises Residents of Hepatitis A Risk
(Winchester, Va.) — The Virginia Department of Health issues the following alert: The Lord Fairfax Health District has learned that Clearbrook Shopping Center at 3522 Martinsburg Pike, in Clear Brook received green peppers potentially contaminated with hepatitis A virus. Anyone who ate green peppers at this restaurant from October 18 through 23 may have been exposed to hepatitis A. The risk to the public from this exposure is low, but health officials share this information in an effort to keep the community informed. more>>

Prince William Health District Warns of Rabies Concern
City of Manassas Park, VA
In order to protect the health of residents and visitors, the Prince William Health District (PWHD) is issuing a notice about a cat that has been found with rabies in the City of Manassas Park.
A cat that was found on October 17 in the area of Martin Drive in the City of Manassas Park has tested positive for rabies. Reportedly, the cat scratched and/or bit an area resident.  PWHD asks anyone who may have come in contact with a cat in or around Martin Drive between October 7 and 17 to call the health district at 703-792-6300. The cat was described to have long fur that was white with dark brown and black markings. In addition, the animal was noted to have an injured hind leg. more>>

Dispose of Unused Prescription Drugs at National Drug Take-Back Day, Oct. 26

(BRISTOL, Va.) –The Virginia Department of Health, Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps and local law enforcement agencies will hold no-questions-asked prescription drug disposal events at multiple locations on Saturday, October 26. Pills and patches will be accepted, but not sharp objects such as needles and syringes. The service is free, anonymous and environmentally safe. This year for the first time, you also may dispose of vaping devices, cartridges and substances. more>>

Lord Fairfax Health District Advises Residents of Rabid Cat along Back Road near Toms Brook in Shenandoah County
Seek Help Immediately if You Were Exposed
(Winchester, Va.)The Lord Fairfax Health District is notifying the public of a rabid feral cat along Back Road (Route 623) near the intersection of Pontzer Road (Route 697) north of Toms Brook in Shenandoah County. The cat attacked a person without provocation; it was later euthanized and sent for testing, which revealed that it was sick with rabies. more>>

Pittsylvania-Danville Health District Offers Free Flu Vaccine
(DANVILLE, Virginia) – The Pittsylvania-Danville Health District will offer free seasonal flu vaccine at two special clinics on Saturday, October 26:

      • Danville Community Farmers’ Market, 629 Craghead St. in Danville from 8 a.m. to noon; and
      • 12th Annual Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Trunk or Treat at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex (next to the stage), 19783 U.S. Highway 29 in Chatham, from 4 to 8 p.m.

A limited supply of free influenza vaccine will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for everyone ages 3 and older. more>>

(Newport News, Va.) — The Peninsula Health District (PHD) is issuing the following alert: an employee at Ginny’s Restaurant located at 1900-A George Washington Memorial Hwy, Yorktown, Virginia, was recently diagnosed with Hepatitis A. As a result, persons who consumed food or drinks from Ginny’s Restaurant on any of the following dates – August 22, 23, 28, 29, and September 4, 2019 – may have been exposed to Hepatitis A. The restaurant has been cooperating fully with the Peninsula Health District in identifying and mitigating any risk. Saturday, Sept. 28 – Flu Shot Exercise Starts at 10 a.m.
(Fredericksburg, Va.) The Virginia Department of Health’s Rappahannock Area Health District will offer free flu shots on Saturday, Sept. 28, beginning at 10 a.m. during the State Fair of Virginia at the Meadow Event Park. The VDH uses these events as exercises to determine our readiness to respond in a pandemic flu emergency. This flu shot exercise will take place in the Farm Bureau Center Exhibition Hall on Festival Loop. Only 400 doses of vaccine will be available, and will be offered to anyone 12 years and older on a first-come, first-served basis, until 7 p.m. or until the supply of flu shots runs out. more>>

Late Summer Pool Safety: Remain Vigilant to Prevent Illness

(Fredericksburg, Va.)— While summer is almost over and many are enjoying time at a swimming pool, the Rappahannock Area Health District (RAHD) reminds all swimmers to follow good health practices at swimming pools to prevent illness. Recently, the Health District has been made aware of several cases of cryptosporidiosis involving swimming pools at the Massad YMCA and Curtis Park in Stafford County. Northern Virginia Area Investigating an Increase in Intestinal Illness Associated with Cyclospora
Health Districts in the Region Seeking the Cause of Cyclosporiasis Increase

The health districts in northern Virginia are notifying the public that there has been a significant increase in the number of reported cyclosporiasis cases since mid-June 2019. To date there are 15 cyclosporiasis cases reported in the Northern Region of Virginia, up from eight at this time last year. Additionally, more than 40 people from two large businesses in the area have reported gastrointestinal illness, and are under investigation for suspected cyclosporiasis. A food or water source of this outbreak has not yet been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.  more>>

(Winchester, Va.)The Lord Fairfax Health District is notifying the public of a rabid kitten found near the Rivermont Volunteer Fire Department station, at 714 Rivermont Drive in Front Royal. The kitten was captured on June 17, along with two other cats.  The cats, believed to be feral, were captured and taken to a veterinarian, who the next day noted abnormal behavior in the one kitten, which was euthanized. Rabid Skunk Confirmed in Spring City, Near Town of Cleveland, Russell Co.
