Ring in the New Year Vaccine Clinics

December 20, 2010

LENOWISCO Health District provides FREE vaccine clinics

(WISE, Virginia) –  As the New Year approaches, many folks often think of ways to improve their health, and the health of their loved ones. While families are together during the holidays, encourage family members to get the recommended vaccinations for themselves and for their children, including the annual flu vaccine if they have not received it yet this year. It’s still not too late to get a seasonal flu vaccine. Historically, the highest flu activity in our area tends to occur in the latter winter months of January, February and March. Virginia has seen an increase in influenza cases during the month of December 2010.

In recognition of ringing in the New Year in a healthy way, the LENOWISCO Health District will be hosting free vaccine clinics at its local health department sites on Monday, December 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to the vaccines for children (VFC) program which provides free vaccines to VFC eligible children, the District has available a limited amount of the following free vaccines for other children and/or adults:

  • injectable influenza (flu) for ages three and older
  • nasal mist influenza (flu) for ages 2 to 49 years
  • pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine routinely for persons 50 years of age or older and persons two years of age and older with certain chronic medical conditions
  • meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine recommended for ages 11 to 18 years, college freshman living in dormitories and persons with certain medical conditions
  • TDaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine for ages 11 to 64 years

These vaccines will be available at no cost to clients, on a first come, first serve basis on December 27, 2010. However, an administration fee may be billed to the client’s insurance company, if the insurance company is a participating provider with the health department. The LENOWISCO Health District is a participating provider with the following insurance companies:  Virginia Medicaid, Medicare, UMWA, Black Lung, Anthem, and Tennessee BC/BS.

After Monday, December 27, flu vaccine will be available at the health department on December 28, 29, and 30, at a discounted price of $10 per flu vaccination. All other vaccines will return their regular pricing.
