Breast Health Services Are Available At Local Health Departments; Free For Eligible Women

October 18, 2011

— October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month —

(WISE, Va.) – The LENOWISCO Health District, which serves individuals in Lee, Scott and Wise counties and the City of Norton, encourages women in our communities to learn about breast health education and free screening programs that are available through the local health department:

  • The Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (Every Woman’s Life) provides free breast and cervical screenings to eligible women from age 40 to 64;
  • Komen Breast Health, an initiative of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, provides free breast screenings and diagnostic testing if indicated, to eligible women from age 18 to 64; and
  • Miles for Mammograms, provided by the Wellmont Foundation, provides free breast screenings and diagnostic testing if indicated, to eligible women from age 18 to 64.

“It is important to understand the risk factors and precautions associated with breast cancer,” said Michelle McPheron, nurse manager of the LENOWISO Health District. “Some risk factors such as poor nutrition are avoidable, while others such as family history are not avoidable. Screening and early detection are essential tools in fighting this disease.”

In recent years the United States has made great strides in the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Still, far too many women and their families are affected by this disease. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that more than 230,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U. S. by the end of 2011. NCI also estimates that nearly 40,000 women in our country will lose the battle with breast cancer this year.

To make an appointment or to check on eligibility for a free breast screening, please call any local health department:
