-Sharing Knowledge About Health Issues and Healthcare Resources-

(WISE, Va.) – The LENOWISCO Health District is pleased to announce an exciting, new, free health promotion training program funded by the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Minority Health and Health Equity. The District will partner with local faith-based organizations to offer the Community Health Ambassadors Program (CHAP), an eight-week free health promotion training series that focuses on health issues, educational and healthcare resources in the community and how individuals can share what they learn with others in their families and communities.

The series of classes will cover the following topics:

  • An Introduction to the Program and Tools;
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity;
  • Cardiovascular Disease;
  • Diabetes;
  • Asthma and Cardiac Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPN);
  • Cancer;
  • Substance Abuse, and
  • Safety.

The first series of classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons, October 25 through December 13, 2011, from 12:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day, at Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church, 9614 Coeburn Rd. in Wise. The classes are free but registration is required.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness about prevention and intervention for common healthcare issues, and ways to utilize available healthcare resources,” said Shirley Miller, health educator senior with the LENOWISCO Health District (Virginia Department of Health). “The goal of CHAP is to create a network of ambassadors who share health information with families, church congregations and other individuals and groups in the community.”
