Vibriosis is an illness caused by Vibrio bacteria that naturally occur in salt and brackish (a mix of salt and fresh) waters. How can I become sick with vibriosis?Illustrated Oyster ImageYou can get a stomach illness by eating undercooked or raw seafood, especially shellfish such as oysters, clams, or mussels.
You can also get a wound infection when a cut or sore comes into contact with water containing Vibrio bacteria.
What are the symptoms? Symptoms vary by infection type.

How can I prevent it?

Properly cook seafood and ask for fully cooked or pasteurized shellfish when eating at a restaurant.
Make sure raw seafood never touches cooked foods.
Avoid getting salt water in cuts or scrapes and use waterproof bandages to cover any wounds before getting into the water.
