{"id":10118,"date":"2023-04-25T11:12:01","date_gmt":"2023-04-25T15:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=10118"},"modified":"2023-04-27T12:26:26","modified_gmt":"2023-04-27T16:26:26","slug":"office-of-the-chief-medical-examiner-seeks-public-help-to-identify-skeletal-remains","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/office-of-the-chief-medical-examiner-seeks-public-help-to-identify-skeletal-remains\/","title":{"rendered":"Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Seeks Public Help to Identify Skeletal Remains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April 25, 2023<br \/>\n<strong>Media Contact:\u00a0 <\/strong>Brookie Crawford, <a href=\"mailto:brookie.crawford@vdh.virginia.gov\">brookie.crawford@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Office of the Chief Medical Examiner Seeks Public Help to Identify Skeletal Remains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>RICHMOND, Va.<\/strong> \u2013 Today, Virginia Department of Health\u2019s (VDH) Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) released facial approximations of eight skeletal remains found in the Central Virginia region.\u00a0 The facial images represent the eight men whose remains were found in separate locations between 1988 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these cases have remained unidentified for decades,\u201d said Lara Newell, the long-term unidentified coordinator for OCME. \u201cThe goal is to get the information and the likenesses out into the public in the hopes that they will be recognized, and eventually identified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The facial approximations were created from CT scans of the skulls and examinations of the remains by the <a href=\"https:\/\/le.fbi.gov\/science-and-lab\/forensics\">FBI Forensic Anthropology and Forensic Imaging Units<\/a> at no cost to OCME or law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs of the facial approximations have been entered into the case files of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons Systems (NamUs). NamUs is a web-based computer search engine funded by the National Institute of Justice to facilitate matching missing and unidentified persons.<\/p>\n<p>Information on the unidentified individuals is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a White male, approximately 39-64 years old, were found in an overgrown area near a pathway in the City of Richmond on July 2, 2020. Cause and manner of death undetermined. The individual is approximately 5\u20192\u201d to 5\u20197\u201d in height and had healed fractures to nose, ribs and shoulder (clavicle). Fractures to nose would have caused deviation to the left. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/72826\">72826<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a Black male, approximately 33-49 years old, were found in the rear yard of a residential area within the floodplain of the James River in the City of Richmond on March 7, 2016. Cause and manner of death undetermined. The individual is approximately 5\u20199\u201d to 6\u20193\u201d in height and had healed fracture of the right knee, may have walked with a limp\/locked knee. May have been partially deaf in the left ear due to trauma (healing). NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/14889\">14889<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a Hispanic male, approximately 25-35 years old, were found in a wooded area in Highland Springs in Henrico County on January 28, 2014. Cause of death is homicidal violence of undetermined etiology, and the manner is homicide. The individual is approximately 4\u20198\u201d to 5\u20193\u201d in height and has had numerous dental restorations. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/12242\">12242<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a Black male, approximately 50-70 years old, were found in an industrial area by construction crews in the City of Richmond on September 26, 2000. Cause and manner of death undetermined. The individual is approximately 5\u20192\u201d to 5\u20199\u201d in height and healed rib and lower left leg fractures. NamUs ID:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/6148\">6148<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a Black male, approximately 34-68 years old, were found in a residential area in the City of Richmond on October 23, 1995. Cause and manner of death undetermined. The individual is approximately 5\u20199\u201d in height and had jaw fracture. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/903\">903<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of a White male, approximately 45-65 years old, were found in a wooded area in Brunswick County by a hunter on January 1, 1990. Cause and manner of death are undetermined. The individual had healed facial and abdominal trauma, possibly from a car accident or another traumatic event, 15 years prior to death. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/6513\">6513<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The skeletal remains of two white Hispanic males were found in a wooded area in Ruther Glen in Caroline County by hunters on November 10, 1988. The older male is approximately 35-45 years old and between 5\u20195\u201d and 5\u20199\u201d in height.\u00a0 The younger male is approximately 17-25 years old and is approximately 5\u20196\u201d in height.\u00a0 DNA indicates a possible parent-child relationship. Cause death was blunt force injury to the head and the manner is listed as homicide. NamUs es un buscador inform\u00e1tico en Internet financiado por el Instituto Nacional de Justicia que facilita la b\u00fasqueda de personas desaparecidas no identificadas.<br \/>\nA continuaci\u00f3n, ofrecemos la informaci\u00f3n sobre estas personas no identificadas:<\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n blanco, de entre 39 y 64 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados el 2 de julio de 2020, en una zona cubierta de maleza cerca de un camino en la ciudad de Richmond. Causa y forma de muerte sin determinar. Este individuo mide aproximadamente entre un metro sesenta y un metro setenta de estatura (1,60 -1,70 metros) y ten\u00eda fracturas cicatrizadas en la nariz, las costillas y el hombro (clav\u00edcula). Las fracturas en la nariz habr\u00edan causado una desviaci\u00f3n de \u00e9sta hacia la izquierda. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/72826\">72826<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n afroamericano, de entre 33 y 49 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados el 7 de marzo de 2016, en el patio trasero de una zona residencial dentro de la zona inundable del r\u00edo James, en la ciudad de Richmond. Causa y forma de muerte sin determinar. Este individuo mide aproximadamente entre un metro setenta y un metro noventa de estatura (1,70 -1,90 metros) y ten\u00eda una fractura cicatrizada en la rodilla derecha; es posible que caminara cojeando o con la rodilla inmovilizada. Puede haber estado parcialmente sordo del o\u00eddo izquierdo debido a un traumatismo (cicatrizado). NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/14889\">14889<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n hispano, de entre 25 y 35 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados el 28 de enero de 2014, en una zona de \u00e1rboles en Highland Springs, Henrico County. El fallecimiento se debe a violencia de origen desconocido y la forma de la muerte se considera homicidio. Este individuo mide aproximadamente entre un metro cuarenta y cinco y un metro sesenta de estatura (1,45 -1,60 metros) y se ha sometido a numerosas reconstrucciones dentales. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/12242\">12242<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n afroamericano, de entre 50 y 70 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados por unos trabajadores de la construcci\u00f3n el 26 de septiembre de 2000 en una zona industrial de la ciudad de Richmond. Causa y forma de muerte sin determinar. Este individuo mide aproximadamente entre un metro sesenta y un metro setenta de estatura (1, 60 y 1,70 metros) y tiene fracturas cicatrizadas en las costillas y en la parte inferior de la pierna izquierda. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/6148\">6148<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n afroamericano, de entre 34 y 68 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados el 23 de octubre de 1995 en una zona residencial de la ciudad de Richmond. Causa y forma de muerte sin determinar. Este individuo mide aproximadamente un metro setenta de estatura (1,70 metros) y ten\u00eda la mand\u00edbula fracturada. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/903\">903<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de un var\u00f3n blanco, de entre 45 y 65 a\u00f1os, fueron encontrados por un cazador el 1 de enero de 1990, en una zona de \u00e1rboles en Brunswick County. Causa y forma de muerte sin determinar. Este individuo presentaba traumatismos en el rostro y en el abdomen ya cicatrizados, posiblemente a consecuencia de un accidente de coche u otro suceso traum\u00e1tico que pudo haber ocurrido unos 15 a\u00f1os antes de su muerte. NamUs ID: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namus.gov\/UnidentifiedPersons\/Case#\/6513\">6513<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Los restos \u00f3seos de dos varones blancos hispanos fueron encontrados por unos cazadores el 10 de noviembre de 1988, en una zona de \u00e1rboles en Ruther Glen, Caroline County. El var\u00f3n de m\u00e1s edad tiene entre 35 y 45 a\u00f1os y mide entre un metro sesenta y cinco y un metro setenta y cinco de estatura (1,65 y 1,75 metros). El var\u00f3n m\u00e1s joven tiene entre 17 y 25 a\u00f1os y mide aproximadamente un metro setenta de estatura (1,70 metros). La prueba de ADN indica una posible relaci\u00f3n padre-hijo. La causa de la muerte fue por traumatismo craneal por objeto contundente y la forma de la muerte se considera homicidio.
