{"id":12149,"date":"2024-11-21T11:15:52","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T16:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=12149"},"modified":"2024-11-21T11:28:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T16:28:00","slug":"12149-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/archived-news-releases\/2024-regional-news-releases\/12149-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Report Rabies Case in Raccoon in Richmond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>November 21, 2024<strong><br \/>\nMedia Contact: <\/strong>Bryan Hooten,\u00a0<u><a href=\"mailto:RHHDpr@vdh.virginia.gov\">RHHDpr@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a><\/u>, 804-807-1727<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Report Rabies Case in Raccoon in Richmond<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RICHMOND, Va. \u2014 The Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) would like to notify community members residing near the vicinity of Hawthorne Avenue in Richmond of a raccoon that has tested positive for rabies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rva.gov\/animal-care-control\"><strong>Richmond Animal Care &amp; Control<\/strong><\/a> (RACC) observed an aggressive raccoon walking in circles on Hawthorne Avenue in Richmond on November 16. The raccoon was impounded and tested positive for rabies. There are NO known exposures to any human or animal at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone having information regarding any exposure to this animal (bite, scratch or contact with saliva by open wound or eyes, nose, mouth) should contact the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Environmental Health Office at 804-205-3912. Exposures also include direct contact between your pet and the rabid animal. After hours, please contact Richmond Animal Care and Control at 804-646-5573.<\/p>\n<p>Richmond and Henrico Health Districts remind all residents to follow these important rabies prevention guidelines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not feed stray animals.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid wild animals, especially raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks.<\/li>\n<li>Feed your pets indoors and do not let them wander.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies and their shots are up to date.
