Any well submerged during the recent flooding event is likely to be contaminated, even if there is no apparent damage.<\/p>\n<p>The free private well test kits are available to residents in the LENOWISCO and Cumberland Plateau Health Districts. To qualify for testing, the well must first be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellwater.bse.vt.edu\/files\/SHOCK442-663_PDF.pdf\">disinfected and flushed<\/a>. VDH recommends having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vawaterwellassociation.org\/about\/membercenter\/\">well driller<\/a> assist with this process. For those choosing to disinfect the well themselves, all safety precautions and instructions should be followed using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellwater.bse.vt.edu\/files\/442-663.pdf\">these instructions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once well users disinfect and flush their well, a free test kit can be requested by calling one of the following health departments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buchanan County Health Department \u2013 276-935-4591<\/li>\n<li>Dickenson County Health Department \u2013 276-926-4979<\/li>\n<li>Lee County Health Department \u2013 276-346-2011<\/li>\n<li>Russell County Health Department \u2013 276-889-7621<\/li>\n<li>Scott County Health Department \u2013 276-386-1312<\/li>\n<li>Tazewell County Health Department \u2013 276-988-5585<\/li>\n<li>Wise County Health Department \u2013 276-328-8000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well water impacted by flooding can have germs that lead to gastrointestinal illness. The kits will include the tools necessary to collect samples for testing for total coliform and <em>E. coli<\/em>. Test results will only indicate if the well is contaminated.<\/p>\n<p>Tests must be returned Monday through Thursday to the nearest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/local-health-districts\/\">local health department<\/a> location within the Cumberland Plateau or LENOWISCO health districts.
