A child\u2019s up-to-date Asthma Action Plan should be shared with their caregivers and summer camp staff. Individuals with asthma or asthma-like symptoms, including chest tightness or pain, wheezing when exhaling, and\/or trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing, or wheezing, should talk to a physician. May is <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/get-involved\/asthma-and-allergy-awareness-month\/#:~:text=Since%201984%2C%20the%20Asthma%20and,other%20people%20about%20allergic%20diseases.\"><strong>Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cOne of the most useful steps families can take to promote asthma health is to make sure you have an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan to share with caregivers and school, or summer camp staff,\u201d says Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Childhood Health Coordinator Becca Bruhl. \u201cAn asthma action plan gives kids, caregivers, and school staff a step-by-step guide to manage symptoms, avoid triggers, and know exactly what to do in an emergency. It&#8217;s a vital tool for keeping children healthy, active, and in school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Richmond is considered an <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/aafa-2024-asthma-capitals-report.pdf\"><strong>Asthma Capital<\/strong><\/a> according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/aafa-2023-asthma-capitals-report.pdf\"><strong>Asthma &amp; Allergy Foundation of America<\/strong><\/a>. The Richmond region also ranks 8<sup>th<\/sup> on <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/asthma-allergy-research\/allergy-capitals\/\"><strong>the list of most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some steps community members can take to help manage asthma for themselves and their families during the summer months.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make an appointment with your doctor and your child\u2019s doctor over the summer.<\/li>\n<li>Follow your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2016\/12\/Asthma-Action-Plan-2019.pdf\"><strong>Asthma Action Plan<\/strong><\/a> to keep asthma under control.<\/li>\n<li>Manage your home\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/asthma\/asthma-triggers-causes\/air-pollution-smog-asthma\/indoor-air-quality\/#:~:text=Indoor%20air%20can%20have%20a,other%20symptoms%20like%20skin%20rashes.\"><strong>indoor air quality<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Wear a mask in crowded places, wash hands properly, and stay away from sick people.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you and your family get rest, adequate sleep and hydration, and eat healthy food.<\/li>\n<li>Make a plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/09\/Respiratory-Virus-Immunizations-Table.pdf\"><strong>get updated vaccines<\/strong><\/a> for fall respiratory infections such as flu and COVID-19 when they become available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>RHHD encourages residents experiencing the symptoms of asthma to reach out to a primary care or other physician to receive diagnosis and treatment. Community members can get help connecting to a primary care physician, regardless of insurance status, by visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/rhhd.gov\/connect-pc\"><strong>rhhd.gov\/connect-pc<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>RHHD encourages residents with school-aged children to make sure their child\u2019s school nurse and summer camp staff have a copy of their Asthma Action Plan.
