The Chesapeake Health Department is a key community partner in the fight to prevent drug overdoses by providing support, encouraging recovery and spreading overdose prevention awareness.<\/p>\n<p>Fatal drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in <a href=\"https:\/\/wisqars.cdc.gov\/lcd\/?o=LCD&amp;y1=2018&amp;y2=2023&amp;ct=10&amp;cc=INJ&amp;g=51&amp;s=0&amp;r=0&amp;ry=2&amp;e=0&amp;ar=lcd1age&amp;at=groups&amp;ag=lcd1age&amp;a1=0&amp;a2=199\">Virginia<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/drug-overdose-data\/overdose-deaths\/\">In 2024<\/a>, 1,403 Virginians tragically lost their lives to drug overdoses. Chesapeake has experienced 223 local emergency room overdose visits with ten confirmed fatalities since the beginning of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAddiction is complex,\u201d Jennifer Hahn, nurse practitioner and certified REVIVE! Trainer, said. \u201cAn untreated overdose can lead to severe health consequences or unintentional death. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even experimenting with one pill can kill. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/onepill\">\u2018One Pill Can Kill\u2019<\/a> campaign has helped raise awareness. REVIVE! gives the community the tools to respond and prevent overdose deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs both a clinician and a parent, I find it terrifying\u2014no one thinks it can happen to them until it does. If we can prevent even one family from experiencing the preventable loss of a loved one, this public health effort is worth it.\u201d Hahn said.<\/p>\n<p>Chesapeake Health Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/overdose-prevention\/\">overdose prevention<\/a> services include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overdose reversal education (REVIVE!),<\/li>\n<li>Naloxone kits,<\/li>\n<li>Drug test strips,<\/li>\n<li>Drug treatment services referrals,<\/li>\n<li>HIV and hepatitis testing, and<\/li>\n<li>Connections to medical care and support services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose with REVIVE!
