{"id":16238,"date":"2025-11-10T16:55:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T21:55:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=16238"},"modified":"2025-11-10T16:55:47","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T21:55:47","slug":"virginia-department-of-health-closes-a-portion-of-the-broad-bay-to-shellfish-harvesting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/archived-news-releases\/2025-regional-news-releases\/virginia-department-of-health-closes-a-portion-of-the-broad-bay-to-shellfish-harvesting\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Department of Health Closes a Portion of the Broad Bay to Shellfish Harvesting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>November 10, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Media Contact:\u00a0 Stephanie Hudson, stephanie.hudson@vdh.virginia.gov<br \/>\n(804) 396-9640<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CLOSES A PORTION OF THE BROAD BAY TO SHELLFISH HARVESTING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RICHMOND, Va. &#8211; The Virginia Department of Health announced today that portions of Broad Bay are closed to shellfish harvesting due to a sewage release that occurred on November 8, 2025.\u00a0 Because these waters can be contaminated with pollutants such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses, shellfish taken from the area affected by the emergency closure are currently unacceptable for consumption.\u00a0 The temporary emergency closure is set to be effective from November 10, 2025, through November 30, 2025.\u00a0 However, the Shellfish Safety Division will be conducting sampling and will reopen earlier if it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Ingesting shellfish taken from the closed areas at this time could cause gastrointestinal illnesses including Norovirus, Hepatitis A and Shigellosis.
