On January 24, DC Water completed a bypass to reroute wastewater around the collapsed section of pipe and back into the sewer system. Updates on repairs can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcwater.com\/about-dc-water\/media\/potomac-interceptor-collapse\">DC Water page<\/a>. Maryland has regulatory authority over the Potomac River for issuing shellfish closures and recreational advisories as well as water quality monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/mde.maryland.gov\/Pages\/index.aspx\">Maryland Department of the Environment<\/a>\u00a0(MDE)\u00a0and the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.maryland.gov\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Maryland Department of Health<\/a> (MDH). VDH has a long-standing relationship with these agencies navigating pollution events and water quality monitoring in the Potomac River and have been in constant communication since the event occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is conducting regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deq.virginia.gov\/news-info\/shortcuts\/topics-of-interest\/potomac-interceptor-collapse\">water quality testing<\/a> to assess the impacts of this spill as it continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of Virginians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-17365-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"1\" ><div id=\"drinking\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-17365-0-0-1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Drinking Water<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The\u00a0nearest\u00a0Virginia\u00a0locality\u00a0using\u00a0the Potomac\u00a0River as a primary source of water is Fairfax.\u00a0Fairfax Water's Potomac River intake is\u00a0located\u00a0several miles upstream of where the sewage spill enters the Potomac and is therefore not\u00a0impacted.<\/p>\n<p>DC Water has\u00a0stated\u00a0its drinking water is NOT affected by this incident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-17365-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"2\" ><div id=\"shellfish\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-17365-0-0-2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Shellfish Closures<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>At this time, Virginia shellfish growing areas are <strong>not impacted<\/strong> by the sewage spill.<\/p>\n<p>On February 17, VDH staff conducted a routine seawater sampling run for shellfish growing areas from Colonial Beach to the 301 Bridge, collecting 36 water samples in total. Based on the laboratory analyses, there was no elevated fecal coliform bacteria concentrations, with the vast majority of the samples were at or below the detection limit for the test.<\/p>\n<p><span data-teams=\"true\">VDH collected an additional 37 routine samples on February 26, further downstream in Westmoreland County near Coles Point, at shellfish growing areas including Lower Machodoc, Gardner, Jackson and Bonum Creeks.\u00a0 These samples also showed no elevated bacterial concentrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17516 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/VA-Seawater-Sampling.jpg\" alt=\"The map shows the 36 locations shellfish growing areas from Colonial Beach to the 301 Bridge where VDH conducted a seawater sampling on Feb. 17.\" width=\"600\" height=\"776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/VA-Seawater-Sampling.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/VA-Seawater-Sampling-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Please note, the areas shown in red are shellfish harvesting condemnations that existed prior to the Potomac River spill.\u00a0 More information on those closures is available at the links below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond001A-036.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond001A-036.pdf<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond001-088.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond001-088.pdf<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond003-001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/cond003-001.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On March 10, MDE <a href=\"https:\/\/news.maryland.gov\/mde\/2026\/03\/10\/maryland-department-of-the-environment-lifts-precautionary-shellfish-harvesting-closure-in-potomac-river\/\">lifted<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/mde.maryland.gov\/programs\/marylander\/fishandshellfish\/Pages\/Emergency-Closures.aspx\">shellfish closure<\/a> that was issued January 25.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-17365-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div id=\"recreation\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-17365-0-0-3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Recreation<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>On March 17, VDH fully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-news-releases\/vdh-lifts-potomac-river-recreational-water-advisory\/\">lifted<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/vdh-issues-recreational-water-advisory-for-the-potomac-river\/\">recreational water advisory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The advisory was issued February 13, out of an abundance of caution, due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcwater.com\/about-dc-water\/media\/potomac-interceptor-collapse\">sewage spill in the Potomac River<\/a> that occurred January 19, and subsequent reports of a sewage discharges in early February. On March 3, VDH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/vdh-partially-lifts-potomac-river-recreational-water-advisory\/\">partially lifted<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/vdh-issues-recreational-water-advisory-for-the-potomac-river\/\">recreational water advisory<\/a> for the portion of the Potomac River from the Route 120 Chain Bridge to the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge (Route 301) in King George County.<\/p>\n<p>On March 14, DC Water successfully completed emergency repairs and returned the sewage flow to the Potomac Interceptor. Water quality sampling results collected by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Maryland, and Washington DC partners\u00a0indicate\u00a0bacteria concentrations in the Potomac River outside of the immediate spill site are at levels acceptable for all recreational water use.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia residents are advised that Montgomery County, Maryland, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.maryland.gov\/newsroom\/Pages\/Maryland%20health%20officials%20provide%20update%20on%20recreational%20water%20advisory%20for%20Montgomery%20County%20impacted%20by%20Potomac%20Interceptor%20spill.aspx\">maintaining\u00a0an advisory<\/a> for the land areas\u00a0impacted\u00a0by the sewage overflow and portions of the river within 200 feet of the Maryland shoreline between Swainson Island and Lock 8.\u00a0\u00a0This area closest to the spill site is most likely to be affected by runoff, especially after storm events until all remediation efforts are complete. The Virginia Department of Health will continue to\u00a0monitor\u00a0sampling data as available.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Swimming or other activities in any natural body of water always pose some health risk because the water is not disinfected.
