{"id":17641,"date":"2026-03-06T09:07:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=17641"},"modified":"2026-03-06T09:07:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:07:48","slug":"rhhd-highlights-womens-health-services-for-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/rhhd-highlights-womens-health-services-for-international-womens-day\/","title":{"rendered":"RHHD Highlights Women\u2019s Health Services for International Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 6, 2026<br \/>\n<strong>Media Contact:<\/strong> Bryan Hooten, 804-807-1727, bryan.hooten@vdh.virginia.gov<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>RHHD Highlights Women\u2019s Health Services for International Women&#8217;s Day<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>RICHMOND, Va.<\/strong> \u2014Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) commemorate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> on March 8 by highlighting services for women offered at RHHD clinics, offices, and Resource Centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen women are healthy, our communities are stronger,\u201d said Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Population Health Manager Tamara Jones-Groves. \u201cInternational Women\u2019s Day reminds us of the importance of making sure women have access to the care and resources they need at every stage of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RHHD offers the following programs and services that focus on women\u2019s health:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Improving access to maternal health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/wic\/\">Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)<\/a> provides nutrition education and healthy foods to improve pregnancy outcomes and enable families to make lifelong healthy eating and lifestyle choices. On average, 8,781 people per month received WIC services across RHHD\u2019s multiple WIC locations.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/healthy-childbirth-and-infancy\/#maternity\">Maternity Navigation<\/a> team supports expectant parents with pregnancy confirmation, care connection, benefits enrollment, and materials distribution. The Maternity Navigation team served 285 clients in 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Increasing awareness about chronic disease management<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>As part of the VDH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/heart-disease\/virginia-healthy-hearts-initiative\/\">Healthy Hearts Initiative<\/a>, RHHD Cardiovascular Health Community Health Workers support community members with hypertensive conditions by providing:\n<ul>\n<li>Connections to primary care providers<\/li>\n<li>Nutrition and exercise education<\/li>\n<li>Blood pressure monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Gender inequality impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/Missions\/14502\/Did-you-know-there-is-even-a-gender-gap-when-it-comes-to-coronary-heart-disease\">heart attack fatalities<\/a>, highlighting the importance of awareness, prevention, and early disease management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Expanding access to healthcare<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>RHHD clinical services accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance. RHHD also participates in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/vvfc\/locatevvfcprovider\/\">Virginia Vaccines for Children<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/vvfa\/locatevvfaprovider\/\">Virginia Vaccines for Adults<\/a>, providing free immunizations to children and adults who are uninsured or underinsured.<\/li>\n<li>RHHD connects women to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/primary-care-richmond-and-henrico-health-districts\/\">primary care providers<\/a> that focus on women\u2019s health.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/resource-centers\/\">RHHD Resource Centers<\/a> offer a variety of clinical and community health services in Richmond\u2019s public housing communities. All services are available to anyone, and cost is based on a sliding scale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Ensuring women have control over reproductive health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>RHHD offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/stihiv-prevention-program\/\">Family Planning and STI clinical services<\/a> at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/clinical-services\/\">Cary Street<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/henrico.gov\/locations\/east-health-clinic\/\">Henrico East<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/henrico.gov\/locations\/human-services\/\">Henrico West<\/a> clinics, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/resource-centers\/#Resource-Center-Locations\">Mosby Resource Center<\/a>. All services are offered on a sliding scale based on financial availability. Family Planning visits offer the following services:\n<ul>\n<li>Gynecological check-ups for women desiring birth control<\/li>\n<li>Breast self-exam instruction<\/li>\n<li>Pap smears and screening tests for sexually transmitted infections<\/li>\n<li>Birth control methods &amp; counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>RHHD also offers HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/hiv-prevention\/using-hiv-medication-to-reduce-risk\/pre-exposure-prophylaxis\">PrEP<\/a>) services at its <a href=\"https:\/\/henrico.gov\/locations\/east-health-clinic\/\">Henrico East Clinic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/clinical-services\/\">Cary Street Clinic<\/a>. PrEP is a medication that reduces a person&#8217;s chances of getting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Virginia residents can contact the RHHD PrEP team at 804-482-5493.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/events\/awareness-days\/women-and-girls#:~:text=at%20Every%20Stage.-,March%2010,diagnoses%2C%20according%20to%20CDC%20data.\">National Women and Girls HIV Awareness Day<\/a> is March 10.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/rhhd.gov\/\">rhhd.gov<\/a> for more health and safety information.
