{"id":17923,"date":"2026-04-07T13:17:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=17923"},"modified":"2026-04-07T13:17:51","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:17:51","slug":"what-you-dont-see-how-hampton-peninsula-public-health-workers-keep-the-community-safe-every-day","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/what-you-dont-see-how-hampton-peninsula-public-health-workers-keep-the-community-safe-every-day\/","title":{"rendered":"What You Don\u2019t See: How Hampton &#038; Peninsula Public Health Workers Keep the Community Safe Every Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Media Contact<\/strong>: Tes La Dieu, Population Health Manager<\/p>\n<p>(757) 594-7411<\/p>\n<p><strong>What You Don\u2019t See: How Hampton &amp; Peninsula Public Health Workers Keep the Community Safe Every Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You may not think about it when you turn on your tap for a drink of water, sit down at a restaurant, or play at a local beach, but public health is there keeping you safe.\u00a0During National Public Health Week (April 6-10), the Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts are sharing ways our staff work behind the scenes every day to protect the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infectious disease prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We work to <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/epidemiology-toolkit\/\">prevent infectious diseases<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, including\u00a0diseases such as <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/measles\/\">measles<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/epidemiology\/epidemiology-fact-sheets\/norovirus-infection\/\">norovirus<\/a><\/u>, and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/syphilis\/\">syphilis<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>We maintain <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/request-immunization-record\/\">your immunization records <\/a><\/u>in our state registry. We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/requirements\/\">back to school immunizations<\/a><\/u>to non-insured K-12 Virginian students for free.<\/li>\n<li>We provide sexual health education and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/clinic-services\/\">provide Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)<\/a><\/u>to prevent HIV.<\/li>\n<li>We <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/clinic-services\/\">screen, test, and <\/a>treat sexually<\/u>\u00a0transmitted infections.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/lead\/\">peer recovery services, syringe exchange, and drug testing supplies<\/a><\/u> to prevent overdose deaths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Food, water and environmental protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We make sure places you live, work, dine, learn, and play are safe from health hazards!<\/li>\n<li>We <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statefoodsafety.com\/\">provide food permits<\/a><\/u> to those selling or distributing food.<\/li>\n<li>We complete <u><a href=\"https:\/\/inspections.myhealthdepartment.com\/virginia\/districts\">restaurant and milk <\/a>inspections to<\/u>\u00a0ensure that what you eat and drink is safe to consume.<\/li>\n<li>We inspect well and septic systems, spas, water parks, pools, and beach water so that the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/waterborne-hazards-control\/\">water you use and play in is safe<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Population and community health promotion<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We host <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/206\/HPHD-2025-CHA-2.pdf\">community listening <\/a>sessions to<\/u>\u00a0identify our community\u2019s top health needs, barriers, and strengths.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/lead\/\">training in topics such as <\/a>REVIVE! which<\/u>\u00a0teach you how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose using Narcan.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/vital-records\/\">birth, marriage, and death<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n<li>We <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/2026-regional-news-releases\/hampton-peninsula-health-districts-partner-with-virginia-peninsula-regional-jail-to-improve-health-literacy-for-incarcerated-individuals\/\">offer health literacy <\/a>education to<\/u>\u00a0community members and incarcerated populations.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/wic\/\">breastfeeding and nutrition <\/a>education for<\/u>\u00a0women and support healthy pregnancy outcomes for mom and baby.<\/li>\n<li>We provide <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/children-0-5\/\">maternal and child health <\/a>services and<\/u>\u00a0teach classes such as car seat safety, safe sleep, and maternal mental health.<\/li>\n<li>We <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/hampton-peninsula\/emergency-preparedness-response\/\">prepare communities and help residents stay <\/a>safe in<\/u>\u00a0emergencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is just a snapshot of everything the health department does every day to ensure our community\u2019s health and safety. Much of this work happens behind the scenes, yet we all experience the benefits every day.
