While the &#8220;Countdown Clock&#8221; has officially begun for the festival, the Health Department\u2019s mission to safeguard the public has been in high gear for months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to ensure that the only thing our visitors take home are incredible memories,\u201d said Norn Grefe, Environmental Health director at Norfolk Public Health. \u201cWhile Sail 250 is a celebration of history and global partnership, it is also a major public health operation. From the food on the docks to the water in our harbor, we are the invisible shield protecting our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the most critical roles of the Health Department is the rigorous permitting and inspection of every food vendor participating in the festival. With millions in projected event spending, food services will be operating at peak capacity across miles of Norfolk waterfront.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Inspections:<\/strong>\u00a0Every vendor must undergo a thorough permitting process to ensure they meet Virginia\u2019s stringent health codes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pre-Event Inspections: <\/strong>Health inspections will be completed entirely ahead of the event to ensure all safety standards are met before gates open. All evaluations of food storage setup, equipment compliance, and initial sanitation practices will be finalized in advance to guarantee a safe environment for everyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public Education:<\/strong>\u00a0Beyond enforcement, the department provides vendors with the resources and training necessary to maintain high standards under the high-volume pressure of a world-class festival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Norfolk serves as the host city for this once-in-a-generation event, the Health Department\u2019s work is a vital cornerstone of a broad, complex operation built on collaboration and communication.
