Scarborough, Linda.Scarborough@vdh.virginia.gov<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Roanoke City &amp; Alleghany Health District Encourages Families<br \/>\nto Prepare for a Healthy Back-to-School Season<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Don\u2019t Wait Until the Last Minute<\/em><\/p>\n<p>ROANOKE, Va. \u2013 Summer is a busy time for many families. Between vacations and camps, it\u2019s easy to forget about back-to-school physicals. All children enrolling in public school for the first time need a health examination. Students who plan to play middle school or high school sports need them as well. The Roanoke City &amp; Alleghany Health District is encouraging families to secure their back-to-school physicals and immunizations. Families should contact their child\u2019s primary care provider or urgent care for an appointment. For families without a primary care provider, please call your local health department. Appointments fill up fast. Scheduling physicals now can save you a last-minute scramble this fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic health helps children prepare for a healthy, successful return to school. Routine immunizations and physicals ensure that children can return to the classroom, stay healthy, keep their peers healthy, and be ready to learn,\u201d said Jerryann West, public health nurse supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>All Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Departments are offering free immunizations and limited appointments for school physicals on a sliding scale. To schedule an appointment, please call your nearest health department by visiting our website here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/roanoke\/contact-us\/\">https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/roanoke\/contact-us\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Immunizations will be offered at the following back-to-school events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Back to School Bash<br \/>\nFriday, July 31, 4 \u2013 7 p.m.<br \/>\nAlleghany YMCA<br \/>\n101 YMCA Way, Covington<\/li>\n<li>Cuts with Cops<br \/>\nSaturday, August 1, 9 a.m. until supplies run out<br \/>\nCarilion Children\u2019s Pediatric Medicine &#8211; Tanglewood<br \/>\n4348 Electric Road, Roanoke<\/li>\n<li>Back to School Extravaganza<br \/>\nSaturday, August 8, 9 a.m. \u2013 12 p.m.<br \/>\nWilliam Flemming High School<br \/>\n3649 Ferncliff Ave., NW, Roanoke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Children entering public kindergarten must get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/school-age-health-and-forms\/school-health-forms-and-action-plans\/\">school physical<\/a> in Virginia. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/teaching-learning-assessment\/early-childhood-care-education\/preschool\">preschool programs<\/a>, such as Head Start, Early Head Start, and the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), also require an exam.<\/p>\n<p>These physical exams help identify any potential health issues that may affect your child\u2019s learning. The healthcare provider will look at height, weight and blood pressure, and might test vision and hearing. The doctor will also review your child\u2019s medical history, including immunizations.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting until the last minute could lead to longer wait times, missed hours at work or kids missing out on the first day of class or sports.
