{"id":9556,"date":"2022-10-03T21:57:05","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T01:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=9556"},"modified":"2022-10-03T21:57:21","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T01:57:21","slug":"9556-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/archived-news-releases\/2022-regional-news-releases\/9556-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Department of Health Modifies Shellfish Harvesting Closures\u00a0Effective midnight October 4, 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October 3, 2022<br \/>\n<strong>Media Contact:<\/strong> Larry Hill, Eastern Region PIO, 757-449-4287,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:larry.hill@vdh.virginia.gov\">larry.hill@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Virginia Department of Health Modifies Shellfish Harvesting Closures\u00a0Effective midnight October 4, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RICHMOND, Va.\u2014 The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is rescinding an earlier emergency shellfish closure order impacting the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and west of and including the Virginia Inside Passage of the Eastern Shore due to tidal flooding and the remnants of a weather system from Hurricane Ian.\u00a0 Instead, a new closure order has been issued which removes the Potomac tributaries, the Rappahannock River and its tributaries, the York River and its tributaries, and northern portions of the Bayside of the Eastern Shore based on updated weather forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>The re-issued order also goes into effect tonight, at midnight, October 4, 2022.\u00a0\u00a0 The affected areas are posted on the Division of Shellfish Safety\u2019s home page at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/Shellfish\/\">www.vdh.virginia.gov\/Shellfish\/<\/a> and are found in the map below.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency closure by VDH is intended to protect consumers from potential microbiological and chemical pollution hazards introduced into shellfish harvesting areas due to tidal flooding. \u00a0Affected shellfish are bivalve mollusks including oysters and clams, but not crabs or fin fish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect to monitor the situation closely and open harvesting areas as quickly and safely as possible by mobilizing all agency assets,\u201d said Dr. Parham Jaberi, chief deputy commissioner with the Virginia Department of Health.\u00a0 Dr. Jaberi further noted, \u201cWe hope that this is a short-lived event and will continue to keep our community and industry partners apprised through additional daily updates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These closures will be re-evaluated daily with the latest information on water quality samples.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on shellfish closures, visit the VDH <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/environmental-health\/environmental-health-services\/shellfish-safety\/frequently-asked-questions\/\">frequently asked questions<\/a> website on shellfish condemnations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">###<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 3, 2022 Media Contact: Larry Hill, Eastern Region PIO, 757-449-4287,\u00a0larry.hill@vdh.virginia.gov Virginia Department of Health Modifies Shellfish Harvesting Closures\u00a0Effective midnight October 4, 2022 RICHMOND, Va.\u2014 The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is rescinding an earlier emergency shellfish closure order impacting the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and west of and including the Virginia Inside [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":444,"featured_media":0,"parent":8245,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"tags":[182],"class_list":["post-9556","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","tag-shellfish"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
