{"id":9868,"date":"2023-01-13T17:43:48","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T22:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/?page_id=9868"},"modified":"2023-02-07T10:17:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T15:17:50","slug":"virginia-department-of-health-closes-a-portion-of-the-lynnhaven-river-to-shellfish-harvesting","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/news\/public-relations-contacts\/archived-news-releases\/2023-news-releases\/virginia-department-of-health-closes-a-portion-of-the-lynnhaven-river-to-shellfish-harvesting\/","title":{"rendered":"VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CLOSES A PORTION OF THE LYNNHAVEN RIVER TO SHELLFISH HARVESTING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>January 13, 2023<\/p>\n<p>Media Contact: Larry Hill, Eastern Region PIO, 757-683-9175,\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:larry.hill@vdh.virginia.gov\">larry.hill@vdh.virginia.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(RICHMOND, Va.)\u2014 The Virginia Department of Health announced today that a portion of the Lynnhaven River is closed to shellfish harvesting due to a sewage release. \u00a0Because these waters can be contaminated with pollutants such as pathogenic bacteria and viruses, shellfish taken from the area affected by the emergency closure are currently unacceptable for consumption.\u00a0 The temporary emergency closure is set to be effective from January 14, 2023, through February 3, 2023.\u00a0 However, the Shellfish Safety Division will be conducting sampling and will reopen earlier if it is safe to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Ingesting shellfish taken from the closed areas at this time could cause gastrointestinal illnesses including norovirus, hepatitis A and shigellosis. In addition, the Virginia Department of Health urges the public to minimize exposure to the water by rinsing or washing items that come into contact with the water, including fishing gear, life vests, ropes and paddles.
