The film presents an unvarnished window into daily life with mental health challenges, from seemingly insur\u00admountable obstacles to stories of hope and resilience. Through the experiences of these young people, the film confronts the issues of stigma, discrimination, awareness, and silence, and, in doing so, help advance a shift in the public perception of mental health concerns today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Following the preview screening, a panel discussion will facilitate conversations and create engagement opportunities surrounding the movie.<\/p>\n

The issues surrounding mental illness are extraordinarily complex; the risk factors are daunting, the economics bewildering, the politics contentious. Public policy, research, and education can help. But the most important step\u2014and often the most difficult one\u2014is to start talking about it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Panelist: Dr. John (Jack) Fanton, CHKD<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Dr. John (Jack) Fanton<\/strong> is a pediatric psychiatrist at Children\u2019s Hospital of The King\u2019s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia. He specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry and is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry. Dr. Fanton completed his medical education at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, followed by a residency and fellowship at Brown University\/Rhode Island Hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Panelist: Susannah Uroskie, NAMI<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Susannah Uroskie<\/strong> is the board president of NAMI Coastal Virginia. She and her family have been actively involved in raising awareness about mental health issues, particularly after their personal experiences with their daughter\u2019s mental health challenges. Uroskie and her family share their story to help break the stigma of mental illness. NAMI Coastal Virginia provides support groups, educational programs, and resources for individuals and families dealing with mental health issues in the Hampton Roads area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Panelist: Will Driscoll, Youth Sports Mental health & Wellness Alliance<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Will Driscoll<\/strong> was born and raised in Norfolk, VA (Maury High School graduate) and attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where he studied broadcast journalism. Following college Will worked as a news and sports broadcaster for local television affiliates in Fairbanks, Alaska and Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He joined the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2017, and in 2019 was elevated to the position of Executive Director at the Hall. In that role he has continued the Hall\u2019s mission of celebrating athletic excellence in Virginia while also highlighting how sports can be used as a platform to create impact in the community. One such initiative has been the creation of the Youth Sports Mental health & Wellness Alliance<\/strong>, which brings together stakeholders in youth and collegiate athletics to increase the conversation and decrease the stigma around mental health in sports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Panelist: Shant\u2019a Miller White, Parents Against Bullying VA, Inc.<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Shant\u2019a Miller White<\/strong> is the Executive Director and founder of the not-for-profit organization \u201cParents Against Bullying\"<\/strong><\/a>, and CEO of P.U.S.H.\u00a0 Professional Consulting, LLC. Miller White launched Parents Against Bullying after her family experienced firsthand the traumatic effects of a horrible bullying incident that involved her daughter.\u00a0 Since the incident, Miller White has dedicated her life to serving families everywhere and to stamp out bullying wherever it raises its ugly head.\u00a0 Through the efforts of Parents Against Bullying and P.U.S.H.\u00a0 LLC. Miller White provides annual events, monthly workshops, weekly mentoring sessions, summer camps, school visits, assist community centers and much more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Panelist: Shawnice Hernandez Co-Founder of ProjectORF <\/h3>\n

Shawnice Hernandez<\/strong> is a dedicated clinical social worker and the co-founder of ProjectORF, a nonprofit organization committed to bridging the gap in Black mental health. With a deep passion for supporting Black youth, Shawnice has been instrumental in developing and implementing programs that address the unique challenges faced by this community. She focuses on providing holistic mental health education, support, and resources. Her work includes organizing community conversations, interactive workshops, and intensive group sessions aimed at combating transgenerational trauma and promoting mental well-being. Shawnice\u2019s efforts are centered around creating safe spaces for Black youth to express themselves, access mental health resources, and build resilience.
