{"id":3893,"date":"2026-05-19T06:47:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T10:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/norfolk\/?p=3893"},"modified":"2026-05-19T06:47:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T10:47:02","slug":"hantavirus-what-you-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/norfolk\/2026\/05\/19\/hantavirus-what-you-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Hantavirus: What you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-3893\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-3893-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-3893-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-3893-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The Virginia Department of Health believes the\u00a0risk of this Hantavirus outbreak to the public\u00a0is\u00a0<strong>very\u00a0low.<\/strong>\u00a0Virginians\u00a0can\u00a0safely\u00a0continue with their routine travel\u00a0as\u00a0planned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Hantavirus?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hantaviruses are a group of viruses that are found in some wild rodents around the world.\u00a0Andes virus is a type of hantavirus\u00a0found in South America.<\/p>\n<p>Andes virus\u00a0can spread to people\u00a0in\u00a0several\u00a0ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By\u00a0contact\u00a0with\u00a0infected rodents or their\u00a0urine,\u00a0droppings\u00a0or saliva<\/li>\n<li>By\u00a0touching an object or surface contaminated with the virus and then\u00a0touching your nose or mouth<\/li>\n<li>Through close contact with a person who is sick with Andes virus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Andes virus\u00a0can cause\u00a0a severe respiratory illness in people called\u00a0hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).\u00a0HPS is rare but\u00a0often deadly illness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the symptoms?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illness\u00a0often\u00a0begins as a flu-like illness\u00a04\u221242\u00a0days\u00a0after contact with the virus.<\/li>\n<li>Early symptoms can include headache, fever, muscle ache or back pain, nausea or vomiting,\u00a0diarrhea,\u00a0and loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms\u00a0can quickly\u00a0worsen. Cough, shortness of breath,\u00a0chest\u00a0pain or tightness, and difficulty breathing\u00a0might occur.<\/li>\n<li>Andes virus\u00a0can cause\u00a0a severe respiratory illness in people called\u00a0hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).\u00a0HPS is rare but\u00a0often deadly illness.<\/li>\n<li>Up to\u00a0forty\u00a0percent of\u00a0people\u00a0with HPS\u00a0can\u00a0die from the disease.<\/li>\n<li>There is no specific\u00a0treatment\u00a0for\u00a0Andes\u00a0virus\u00a0infection\u00a0or HPS.\u00a0Supportive\u00a0care includes\u00a0treatment of symptoms, rest,\u00a0and\u00a0hydration.\u00a0Early\u00a0medical\u00a0care\u00a0at\u00a0a facility with an intensive care unit can improve survival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What about the May 2026 Hantavirus Outbreak?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization\u00a0(WHO)\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2026-DON599\"><strong>notified<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0May 2, 2026,\u00a0of a\u00a0possible\u00a0hantavirus\u00a0outbreak on\u00a0the\u00a0MV\u00a0Hondius\u00a0cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0Multiple cases, including some fatal cases, have been reported so far. It is possible that there will be more cases.\u00a0That is because it\u00a0can take up to six weeks for symptoms to develop\u00a0after an exposure.\u00a0For the\u00a0latest\u00a0case counts\u00a0and\u00a0updates, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\"><strong>WHO\u2019s website<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or follow WHO on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0current outbreak\u00a0is\u00a0caused by a type of hantavirus called\u00a0<strong>Andes virus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Andes virus is unique.\u00a0It is the only hantavirus that has been shown to spread from person to person.<\/li>\n<li>This spread between people is rare\u00a0and\u00a0has only been shown to occur after\u00a0people start showing symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Signs and symptoms of\u00a0hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS)\u00a0due to Andes virus appear 4 to 42 days after exposure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The federal government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-supports-repatriation-us-citizens-specialized-care-facilities.html\"><strong>coordinated<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the return of\u00a018\u00a0U.S. citizens\u00a0who\u00a0were\u00a0on the ship\u00a0on May 11.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These citizens\u00a0traveled\u00a0by private plane and are being evaluated in specialized medical facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone\u00a0who\u00a0develops\u00a0symptoms\u00a0will be\u00a0quickly\u00a0isolated and\u00a0evaluated\u00a0by healthcare providers.<\/li>\n<li>When passengers are cleared to safely return to their home state by private travel,\u00a0state and local public health professionals will continue to\u00a0monitor\u00a0their health.<\/li>\n<li>See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hantavirus\/faq\/index.html#cdc_faqs_cat3-about-the-passengers\"><strong>CDC\u2019s Frequently Asked Questions<\/strong><\/a> for more details about the passengers.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>VDH is\u00a0closely\u00a0monitoring\u00a0this situation.<\/strong>\u00a0To date,\u00a0one\u00a0Virginia traveler\u00a0disembarked the\u00a0ship\u00a0before the outbreak was\u00a0identified.
