{"id":1490,"date":"2026-04-13T14:35:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/piedmont\/?page_id=1490"},"modified":"2026-04-13T14:39:56","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T14:39:56","slug":"maternal-child-health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/piedmont\/maternal-child-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Maternal &#038; Child Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Maternal &amp; Child Health<\/h1>\n<h2>Maternal Health Support Program<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to funding from the Virginia General Assembly, we are proud to offer expanded maternal health services to support individuals and families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.<\/p>\n<p>Our program includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>access to Community Health Workers (CHWs)<\/li>\n<li>Doula services<\/li>\n<li>providing compassionate<\/li>\n<li>personalized care to help improve health outcomes<\/li>\n<li>and ensuring every family feels supported<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Maternal health remains a critical issue in Virginia. Between 2019\u20132023, there were 34.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, and many of these deaths are considered preventable. Significant disparities also exist\u2014Black women in Virginia are more than twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to White women.<\/p>\n<p>Access to care is another challenge. In Virginia, 31% of counties are considered maternity care deserts, meaning limited or no access to maternity services. If you want to learn more about Maternal Health data in Virginia, see the VDH Maternal Health Dashboard here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/data\/maternal-child-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VDH Maternal Health Dashboard<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Programs like CHWs and doulas play an important role in closing these gaps by providing support, education, and connection to care.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to CHW and doula services, we also offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safe sleep education to help reduce the risk of infant sleep-related deaths<\/li>\n<li>Car seat education and installation classes to ensure children travel safely<\/li>\n<li>Childbirth classes to prepare families for labor and delivery<\/li>\n<li>Moms Under Pressure to monitor and manage blood pressure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Who can access these services?
