{"id":108,"date":"2016-01-29T15:21:47","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T15:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/?page_id=108"},"modified":"2025-09-05T17:45:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T17:45:22","slug":"special-topics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/special-topics\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Topics &#8211; Not Regulated By Virginia Department of Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Electromagnetic Force<\/strong><\/span> (EMF) occurs whenever there is an electrical current and associated with an electric field is also a magnetic field.\u00a0 During the past two decades there have been reports suggesting that high voltage electric transmission lines may cause leukemia in children and other biological effects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Institute of Health\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/emf\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/emf\/index.cfm<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lasers<\/strong><\/span> are devices that modify light to form a powerful beam of energy capable of causing biological damage.\u00a0 Lasers are classified by their wavelength and energy, which provides a reference to judge their potential danger.\u00a0 Lasers have applications in industry, medicine, communications, entertainment and research.\u00a0 Improper use of a laser may cause blindness.\u00a0 Lasers used in surgery also create a hazard to health care personnel from the vaporization of biological material if the area is not well ventilated.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>OSHA: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/SLTC\/laserhazards\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/SLTC\/laserhazards\/index.html<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)<\/span>:<\/strong> uses a very strong magnet and a RF coil to transmit a signal that flips the protons in the hydrogen atoms to become all aligned in the same direction.\u00a0 The RF coil then becomes a radio receiver to detect how many hydrogen atoms return to their original spin direction.\u00a0 The concentration of hydrogen atoms in this medical imaging technique assists physicians to identify certain medical conditions.\u00a0 There are no known ill health effects from strong magnetic fields; however, there is a missile hazard.\u00a0 Patients with metal implants may experience some localized heating from the RF coils.\u00a0 Loose metal objects can be drawn to the magnet at high velocities.\u00a0 Also magnetic storage devices may become damaged, such as credit and bank cards with magnetic strips.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In partnership with the Society of Magnetic Resonance Technologists (SMRT), FDA has created an educational resource poster intended to increase the safety of patients undergoing Magnetic Resonance Imaging exams. The poster provides tips for increasing patient safety and preventing thermal injuries during MRI exams.
