The advance notification covered in part 73 is for spent nuclear reactor fuel shipments and the notification for part 71 is for large quantity shipments of radioactive waste (and of spent nuclear reactor fuel not covered under the final amendment to 10 CFR part 73).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact information:<\/strong><br \/>\nDirector, Technological Hazards Division<br \/>\nVirginia Department of Emergency Management<br \/>\n9711 Farrar Court<br \/>\nNorth Chesterfield, VA 23226<\/p>\n<p>Phone Number : (804) 624-8327<\/p>\n<p>VDEM Situational Awareness Unit 24 hour hotline : (804) 750-8845<\/p>\n<p>Email: veoc@vdem.virginia.gov<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landfill Operators and Scrap Metal Dealers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shipments of municipal waste, or scrap metal may trigger a radiation monitor upon arrival at the landfill or scrap yard\/foundry.\u00a0 Oftentimes the facility will reject the shipment and the shipment will be returned the the point of origin.\u00a0 However, the shipment is now considered a hazardous materials-radioactive shipment and carrier is supposed to have shipping papers describing the hazardous contents and the the vehicle have appropriate placards.<\/p>\n<p>The US DOT has authorized the States to issue to the\u00a0 carrier an exemption from the full characterization of the material on the shipping papers, and exemption from the placard requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The carrier or the facility must contact the Radiological Health Program for an exemption and provide the information regarding the radiation levels and shipping data.\u00a0 Once the information is collected, then our staff may issue by fax an exemption form that shall be provided to the driver of the vehicle for the return trip.<\/p>\n<p>Information regarding these exemptions are available at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/regulations\/hazardous-materials\/how-comply-federal-hazardous-materials-regulations\">DOT Hazmat Web Page<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crcpd.org\/page\/Transportation\">CRCPD Transportation Web Page<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Federal<\/h2>\n<p>The US Department of Transportation regulates the transportation of hazardous materials, including radioactive materials in inter-state commerce.
