The X-ray Program registers approximately 23,500 radiation-producing devices (such as x-ray machines); sets performance criteria for them; and authorizes qualified private inspectors to perform the evaluations and non-department service companies to install and repair the machines.\u00a0 We also maintain a private inspector list, which is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/x-ray-machine-program\/directory-of-inspectors\/\">Directory of Private Inspectors<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>Machines must be inspected within the frequency specified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/laws-and-regulations\/\">x-ray regulations<\/a>.\u00a0 Frequency is based on the type of machine and modality (i.e., diagnostic, therapeutic, non-medical).\u00a0 Any x-ray machine that is determined to be unsafe for human use is restricted from use until 1) the x-ray machine is repaired by a service company, and re-inspected by a qualified state or private x-ray inspector, or 2) the x-ray machine is permanently removed from service. State inspectors audit and monitor private inspections and perform compliance inspections of x-ray facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The Virginia X-ray Program works very closely with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which is responsible for regulating the manufacture and installation\/assembly of diagnostic x-ray machines.\u00a0 The VDH X-ray Program and the FDA collaborate closely for mammography <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/x-ray-machine-program\/mammography-quality-standards-act-mqsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(MQSA)<\/a> and joint surveys for evaluating patient exposures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/x-ray-machine-program\/next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(NEXT).<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Credit Card Payments<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A credit card payment system for X-ray Program fees has been instituted.\u00a0 Registrants may pay their registration and inspection fee payments using this system using the following link:\u00a0<a title=\"Credit Card Payment Site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/radiological-health\/radiological-health\/credit-card-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Credit Card Payment Site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Office of Radiological Health | 109 Governor Street | Richmond, VA\u00a0 23219<\/p>\n<p>Telephone (804) 864-8150<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kelsey Held &#8211;
