Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 5. While you\u2019re changing your clocks, the\u00a0U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a>\u00a0also encourages you\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0test your smoke detector and replace the batteries for smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. In addition\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0CPSC\u2019s advice, Firefighter Cody offers the following tips:<\/p>\n
    \n
  • Place smoke detectors on the ceiling because smoke rises.<\/li>\n
  • Position your detectors in the hallway just outside bedrooms\u2014\u201dthat’s going\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0be most helpful\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0alert you when you\u2019re sleeping,\u201d Cody says.<\/li>\n
  • Test detectors and carbon monoxide alarms monthly. That way you\u2019ll know if they\u2019re still working correctly.<\/li>\n
  • Replace batteries yearly unless otherwise stated. Most smoke detectors should be replaced every ten years.<\/li>\n
  • Reset your detector after a \u201cnuisance\u201d alert\u2014when cooking or shower steam sets off the alarm unintentionally. Cody sees people take the batteries out then and forget\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0replace them. You can also avoid nuisance alarms by placing detectors further away from bathrooms or kitchens (and, again, closer\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0those bedrooms!)<\/li>\n
  • Remove the batteries if possible before disposing of old devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Use your extra hour on Sunday\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0follow a few of Cody\u2019s tips. If you\u2019re a Richmond resident, you can also call the Richmond Fire Department for free installation of a 10-year smoke detector at 804-646-6640. If you\u2019re interested in helping\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0spearhead installation for your neighborhood, Cody says \u201cwe come in with a hundred detectors and 3 or 4 apparatuses and just\u00a0do<\/span>\u00a0a whole bunch across the community.\u201d<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
