The HEF\u2014which is administered by the\u00a0Richmond and Henrico Public Health Foundation\u00a0and supported by the City of Richmond and RHHD\u2014announced its most recent round of funding\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n<p>Gateway Community Health\u00a0is a HEF recipient in the focus area of Substance Use and Recovery. The organization offers recovery services for people experiencing addiction or substance use disorder, pairing housing and transportation support with academic development.<\/p>\n<p>Gateway co-founder Charlene Hinton-Watts is a life-long Richmond resident whose personal and professional experiences throughout the city have illustrated the gaps in services for people working\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>ward recovery. She says housing is fundamental: \u201cIf you can\u2019t keep someone in one place, it\u2019s hard\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0offer services. So housing is a big piece.\u201d Charlene and her business partner, J. Irving Dixon III, began Gateway as a single residential unit. It now functions as a sober-living campus environment in Chester. Once participants have completed the first program phase, Gateway helps them move into independent living spaces, which they call \u201cAngel Houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HEF Program Officer\u00a0Saraya Perry\u00a0is particularly impressed by what she calls Gateway\u2019s \u201cunique and effective\u201d approach\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0linking residential support with academic programming\u2014and it\u2019s this programming that will be supported by the HEF.<\/p>\n<p>Charlene and her team began incorporating education into Gateway\u2019s mission as life skills training, things like learning how\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0access Social Security or\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0fill out a job application. But \u201cresidents wanted more reading comprehension and financial literacy,\u201d she recalls. Charlene, a lawyer by training, began offering civics classes and others jumped in with their own areas of specialty.<\/p>\n<p>About a year ago, Gateway began partnering with\u00a0Love Cathedral Community Church, which had already established a Christian-based Adult Education curriculum. Charlene says that has helped add structure and a sense of purpose\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0Gateway\u2019s educational philosophy: \u201cWe wanted people\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0feel like they were in school, that it wasn\u2019t just a meeting but an actual class. We started with an orientation class\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0prepare people for being students again: \u2018What\u00a0<span class=\"mark999bf9vvz\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>es it mean\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0study?\u2019 \u2018What\u00a0<span class=\"mark999bf9vvz\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>es homework look like?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gateway participants came into the curriculum from a range of educational experiences\u2014some had been\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0college and others had completed elementary school\u2014but Charlene observed each participant learning and growing: \u201cOur first class culminated with presentations that brought so much out of each student\u2014everybody benefited from it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Love Cathedral\u2019s pastor\u00a0Reverend\u00a0<span class=\"mark999bf9vvz\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Do<\/span>nt\u00e9 McCutchen, MDiv, is now also the pastor for Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist in Jackson Ward. This relationship allows Gateway\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0develop educational offerings in Richmond as well as Chester. \u201cGreater Mt. Moriah is a strong community-based church, so we\u2019re seeking\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0bring more people into our program based on the community outreach they\u2019re already\u00a0<span class=\"mark999bf9vvz\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>ing,\u201d Charlene says. Both Pastor McCutchen and Academy Pastor Robin Best, Ed.S, say, \u201cwe are excited about the opportunity\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0partner with Gateway as we fulfill our mission of being the cathedral in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charlene looks forward\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0the way HEF funding will expand educational opportunities\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0include arts and music programming, introducing participants\u00a0<span class=\"marki4h3tpyeg\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0Richmond\u2019s museums and galleries at the same time as they\u2019re connecting with health and social support services.
