That\u2019s true for Enivronmental Health Tech Specialist Natasha Crawford. Natasha is the founder of Healing Hope Urban Gardens, which was recently featured in\u00a0MarketMaker.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Natasha\u2019s journey\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0agriculture and farm ownership was a long one, but her passion for the project never wavered. After time in the military, traveling, and earning a degree in nutritional sciences, Natasha and her wife moved\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0Richmond in 2017. She began work on the gardens in 2021. Natasha credits Virginia\u2019s farming communities with helping make her dream a reality: \u201cOne thing I love about Virginia is that you can reach out\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0any farmer. There are gardening groups all throughout Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield who are willing\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0help each other out. That\u2019s been crucial\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0my success\u2014I&#8217;ve had people who\u2019ve provided me with support, guidance and mentorship. I knew I wanted\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0be a farmer, but sometimes as you get older, it feels hard\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0get started. All I had\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"markaeleoa1js\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>\u00a0was voice my desires and passions. I had so many people who really saw my vision and what I wanted\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"markaeleoa1js\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>\u00a0and really believed in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">While Natasha sees a vibrant farming community across the region, she also knows there\u2019s work\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0be\u00a0<span class=\"markaeleoa1js\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>ne in making sure that agriculture is an accessible field for all. She still sees gender disparities in farming, for example: \u201cOver the last ten years, you\u2019ve seen more and more women becoming interested\u2014and it\u2019s not something we haven\u2019t always been a part of. Farming is not something that\u2019s foreign\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0women\u2014I learned from my great-grandmother. But statistically, when we\u2019re counted among our male counterparts, the numbers are really low. I love it when people see me or hear me talk\u2014I know I\u2019m changing the idea of what a farmer looks like and who can be a farmer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Natasha is also proving that public health workers belong in the garden! As an Environmental Health Specialist Senior by training and the new EH Tech Specialist, Natasha works with and trains the teams who ensure food safety in the restaurants, food production, nursing homes, and childcare industries. The skill sets are similar, she says: \u201ca lot of the concepts that we talk with our operators about are the same concepts that you want\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0have on the farm so that we make sure we are growing and handling food safely for the consumer. A lot of the things I preach on this job, I practice on the farm. I\u2019m washing my hands and washing my lettuce and making sure we\u2019re using potable water.\u201d As a public health worker, Natasha is also invested in wellness and talking\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0community members\u2014she loves meeting people at farmers\u2019 markets and teaching them how\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0incorporate more fresh produce into their diets.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Public health is only one of the fields required for a version of farming committed\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0food justice\u00a0and\u00a0food sovereignty, key concepts for Natasha: \u201cI tell kids, there\u2019s more\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0agriculture than just growing vegetables. We need people who can develop apps that make the work more efficient. We need people who can write grants and repair equipment and invent\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>ols. Farming can be what you want it\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0be. Agriculture can be what you make it. We have the ability and knowledge\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0really change what agriculture looks like for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">If you\u2019re interested in dipping your\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>es into agricultural practices, Natasha strongly encourages connecting with Central Virginia\u2019s community gardens: \u201cThere are always volunteer opportunities that really turn into lessons and support. You\u2019re finding that connection where you can learn\u00a0<span class=\"markoxzu04t6d\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>gether and from each other. Organizations like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thenaturalfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\">Happily Natural,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realrootsfoodsystems.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"10\">Real Roots Food Systems<\/a>, and Richmond City\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rva.gov\/parks-recreation\/community-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\">Community Garden Program<\/a>\u00a0post volunteer opportunities. Once you feel comfortable, you still have someone who will support you with seeds and equipment.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">And if you\u2019re already\u00a0<span class=\"markaeleoa1js\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>ing some backyard gardening, expand your practice with learning opportunities! Natasha says that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdacs.virginia.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\">Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services<\/a>\u00a0offers valuable online trainings and webinars.
