We also know that, for many reasons,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/06\/12\/health-equity-and-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"19\">extreme heat\u00a0<span class=\"mark6c7vj4kpe\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>esn\u2019t affect everyone equally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Pregnant people are one group who are more at risk for heat-related illness and dehydration during hot days. Our bodies\u00a0<span class=\"mark6c7vj4kpe\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>\u00a0lots of hard work\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0cool us\u00a0<span class=\"mark6c7vj4kpe\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>wn when we get\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>o hot, and pregnant people need their bodies\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0work twice as hard\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0cool themselves and their fetus.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Public Health Nurse Joane Bradshaw works with RHHD\u2019s Maternity Navigation, where she frequently sees pregnant folks and new parents. She says that pregnant people, especially in their second and third trimesters, will feel hot more quickly. She encourages these folks\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0remain indoors if possible on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ephtracking.cdc.gov\/Applications\/HeatRisk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"20\">major or extreme heat risk days.<\/a>\u00a0If they\u00a0<span class=\"mark6c7vj4kpe\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>\u00a0have\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0run errands or get outside, she recommends using the early morning and evening hours when it\u2019s cooler.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">For Joane, one of the biggest\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>ols for a healthy pregnancy is hydration. And again, you\u2019re drinking for two. Joane adds fresh ingredients\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0water as a way\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0increase flavor naturally. It\u2019s a reminder that you\u00a0<span class=\"mark6c7vj4kpe\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">do<\/span>\u00a0need additional fluids, regardless of the weather. Breastfeeding involves fluid leaving your body, so you need\u00a0<span class=\"marker3kls61v\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">to<\/span>\u00a0replenish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\">Joane\u2019s tips are for informational purposes only.
