{"id":21611,"date":"2024-10-22T10:51:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-22T14:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/?p=21611"},"modified":"2024-10-22T10:51:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-22T14:51:56","slug":"breast-cancer-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/10\/22\/breast-cancer-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast Cancer Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In October, we recognize one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/data\/virginia-cancer-dashboards\/top-cancers-in-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most commonly occurring cancers<\/a>\u00a0nationwide:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breast-cancer\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Breast cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breast-cancer\/screening\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easiest to treat when doctors find it early<\/a>, so it\u2019s important to talk with your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/05\/20\/what-does-it-mean-to-speak-to-a-medical-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">healthcare provider<\/a>\u00a0about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breast-cancer\/risk-factors\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk factors<\/a>\u00a0and screening.<\/p>\n<p>If you are at average risk for breast cancer, the U.S. Preventive Services Taskforce recommends beginning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/uspstf\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-04\/breast-cancer-screening-final-rec-infographic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breast cancer screening<\/a>\u00a0once you are 40 years old. Here are some options for finding screenings like mammograms near you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The FDA keeps a list of mammography facilities around the country. You can visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfMQSA\/mqsa.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their website<\/a>\u00a0and search by your zip code for a good option.<\/li>\n<li>RHHD\u2019s list of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/primary-care-richmond-and-henrico-health-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">area primary care providers<\/a>\u00a0can help you choose a PCP who is right for you.<\/li>\n<li>VDH sponsors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/every-womans-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Every Woman\u2019s Life<\/a>, a free breast and cervical cancer screening program for people who meet program guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation runs a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vbcf.org\/screening-diagnostic-services-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">services fund<\/a>\u00a0that supports screening for those who are uninsured or underinsured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Literacy Check:<\/strong>\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer-information-in-other-languages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Cancer Association<\/a>\u00a0has great multilingual resources on breast cancer.
