By recognizing their impact, we honor their contributions and inspire future generations to continue building a better, healthier world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here are some folks we want you to know!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/crumpler-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22050\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/crumpler-sm.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler\" width=\"495\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/crumpler-sm.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/crumpler-sm-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/crumpler-sm-768x525.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 495px) 100vw, 495px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In 1864, Dr. Crumpler became <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">the first African American woman to earn a medical degree in the United States<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. She cared for formerly enslaved people in Richmond who had little access to healthcare, often working against sexism and racism to do so.\u00a0 In 1883, she wrote a book called <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Book of Medial Discourses<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> where she shared guidance on maternal and child health; the book is believed to be the first medical text by an African American author.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/740px-David_Satcher_official_photo_portrait.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22051\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/740px-David_Satcher_official_photo_portrait-702x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. David Satcher\" width=\"496\" height=\"723\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/740px-David_Satcher_official_photo_portrait-702x1024.jpg 702w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/740px-David_Satcher_official_photo_portrait-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/740px-David_Satcher_official_photo_portrait.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. David Satcher<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The son of a farmer, Satcher nearly died at age two of whooping cough because his family had little access to health care. He was cared for by the only Black physician in the area and resolved from an early age to become a doctor. In 1993, Dr. Satcher became the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first African American to hold the Centers for Disease &amp; Prevention Director position. <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the CDC, he emphasized disease prevention, instituting\u202finitiatives\u202fto raise childhood immunization rates, address emerging infectious diseases, and prevent food-borne illnesses. Dr. Corbett-Helaire is an Assistant Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a professor at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/Joycelyn_Elders_sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-22053\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/Joycelyn_Elders_sm.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Joycelyn Elders\u00a0\" width=\"466\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/Joycelyn_Elders_sm.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/Joycelyn_Elders_sm-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/119\/2025\/02\/Joycelyn_Elders_sm-768x728.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Joycelyn Elders\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Elders is a pediatrician and public health administrator who was also<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the first African American to be appointed as the Surgeon General of the United States.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> She worked to reduce the prevalence of teenage pregnancy by promoting birth control, counseling, and sex education at school-based clinics.
