{"id":22161,"date":"2025-03-21T13:18:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T17:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/?p=22161"},"modified":"2025-03-21T13:18:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T17:18:03","slug":"world-tb-day-gets-local-with-rhhd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2025\/03\/21\/world-tb-day-gets-local-with-rhhd\/","title":{"rendered":"World TB Day gets local with RHHD\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>March 24, 2025 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/world-tb-day\/about\/index.html\">World TB Day.<\/a> The observance celebrates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch discovered the type of bacteria that causes tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<p>Although the observance highlights TB\u2019s history and global reach, it\u2019s important to know that TB is still very much with us and it impacts people directly in our communities. At RHHD, Tuberculosis Nurse Gabrielle Alvarez shares some key things to know about TB:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anyone can get TB.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can be exposed to regardless of location, income, race, or country of origin,\u201d Gabrielle says. \u201cEven though it\u2019s \u2018World\u2019 TB Day, it\u2019s hyperlocal. People still stigmatize this illness, but anyone can be impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most people with TB do not know they are infected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TB germs can live in your body for years without making you sick. This phase of TB is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tb\/about\/inactive-tuberculosis.html\">latent TB<\/a>. People with latent TB are not contagious and do not experience symptoms, but their latent TB can become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tb\/about\/active-tuberculosis-disease.html\">Active TB disease<\/a>\u2014symptomatic and contagious\u2014at any time.<\/p>\n<p>Gabrielle says that knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tb\/signs-symptoms\/index.html\">the most typical TB symptoms<\/a> can help you decide if you need to get tested and treated for TB. \u201cIf you have a cough that can\u2019t go away or are losing a lot of weight without trying, it might be a sign that you have TB,\u201d she says. \u201cTB spreads through the air, so that cough can be dangerous to your family members and the people who are closest to you, especially children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you are experiencing a long-lasting cough, you can call RHHD\u2019s TB team at 804-482-5500. They can help you figure out if you need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tb\/testing\/index.html\">a TB test<\/a> and which one is best for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The good news is that TB can be prevented and cured!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you learn that you have latent\u2014or \u201csleeping\u201d\u2014TB, your care team will work with you on a short course of preventative treatment. That will\u00a0make sure TB germs\u00a0go away without causing symptoms or passing to anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Active TB disease can also be treated, but the process is longer and includes regular medication over the course of 6 to 12 months. It is very important that people who have active TB disease take the medication exactly as prescribed for the entire length of the treatment. People who stop taking the medicine too soon can become sick again. If the medications are not taken correctly, germs that are still alive in the body may become resistant to those drugs.
