All services are offered on a sliding scale based on financial availability. PrEP is a medication that reduces a person&#8217;s chances of getting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). PrEP may also be an option to help <b><u><a id=\"OWA6d4bb929-7b60-5b31-ca34-260639516933\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW184137184 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/prevention\/prep.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/prep.html#cdc_prevention_overview-overview\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/prevention\/prep.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/basics\/prep.html#cdc_prevention_overview-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\">protect pregnant people and their babies<\/a><\/u><\/b> from getting HIV while trying to get pregnant, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding. Thousands more have unexpected outcomes of labor and delivery with serious short- or long-term health consequences. More than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. are <b><u><a id=\"OWA68c67a53-95b6-3dea-0249-e410f3ef96fc\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW184137184 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/maternal-mortality\/php\/data-research\/mmrc-2017-2019.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/maternal-mortality\/erase-mm\/data-mmrc.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/maternal-mortality\/php\/data-research\/mmrc\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/maternal-mortality\/php\/data-research\/mmrc-2017-2019.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/maternal-mortality\/erase-mm\/data-mmrc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"18\">preventable<\/a><\/u><\/b>. Recognizing urgent maternal warning signs, providing timely treatment, and delivering respectful, quality care can prevent many pregnancy-related deaths.<\/p>\n<p>According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), <b><u><a id=\"OWAd80746aa-3b6b-b05c-6ec4-2d5a4f6a845b\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW184137184 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html#cdc_generic_section_1-most-pregnancy-related-deaths-are-preventable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html#cdc_generic_section_1-most-pregnancy-related-deaths-are-preventable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"19\">Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women<\/a><\/u><\/b>. Multiple factors contribute to these disparities, such as variation in quality healthcare and underlying chronic conditions. Social determinants of health prevent many people from racial and ethnic minority groups from having fair opportunities for economic, physical, and emotional health.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tips for pregnant women and their families<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><b><u><a id=\"OWA1a100867-b99d-9222-27f9-4e8dfa0e1ea0\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW184137184 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/05\/20\/what-does-it-mean-to-speak-to-a-medical-provider\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2024\/05\/20\/what-does-it-mean-to-speak-to-a-medical-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"20\">Talk to a healthcare provider<\/a><\/u><\/b> if anything doesn&#8217;t feel right or is concerning.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Seek immediate care if experiencing any of the <b><u><a id=\"OWA00aac297-9037-0e6f-f948-4234965535df\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW184137184 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hearher\/maternal-warning-signs\/index.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hearher\/maternal-warning-signs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"21\">urgent maternal warning signs<\/a><\/u><\/b>, including severe headache, extreme swelling of hands or face, trouble breathing, heavy vaginal bleeding or discharge, overwhelming tiredness, and more.
