{"id":22268,"date":"2025-04-11T15:52:06","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T19:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/?p=22268"},"modified":"2025-04-11T15:52:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T19:52:29","slug":"black-maternal-health-week-by-the-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/2025\/04\/11\/black-maternal-health-week-by-the-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Maternal Health Week by the numbers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p lang=\"EN-US\">April 11-17 is\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">Black Maternal Health Week.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cThis observance gives us an opportunity to live into our public health mission of promoting healthy living and preventing disease,\u201d said Richmond and Henrico Health Districts Director of Community Programming Margo Webb. \u201cThrough public health data, we know that our Black families are at the highest risk for adverse maternal and child health outcomes. By reflecting on the unique and important historical and cultural aspects of the Black community, we can work together to improve these outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>What do I need to know? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">80% of pregnancy related deaths in the U.S. are\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/maternal-mortality\/php\/data-research\/mmrc-2017-2019.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/maternal-mortality\/erase-mm\/data-mmrc.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/maternal-mortality\/php\/data-research\/mmrc-2017-2019.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/maternal-mortality\/erase-mm\/data-mmrc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">preventable<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">Black women are 3 times as likely to die from a\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html#cdc_generic_section_1-most-pregnancy-related-deaths-are-preventable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/womens-health\/features\/maternal-mortality.html#cdc_generic_section_1-most-pregnancy-related-deaths-are-preventable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\">pregnancy-related cause<\/a>\u00a0than White women. This statistic reminds us that unequal health outcomes are often the result of unequal access to critical care and support before, during, and after pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>How is RHHD challenging these statistics?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">RHHD\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/wic\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/wic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"6\">Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)<\/a>\u00a0served an average of\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"7\">8500 participants a month<\/a>\u00a0in 2024. The program makes sure that all new families have access to affordable and healthy foods and even provides support for breastfeeding!<\/li>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">Our\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/healthy-childbirth-and-infancy\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/healthy-childbirth-and-infancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"8\">Maternity Navigation team<\/a>\u00a0helped\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\">140 clients<\/a>\u00a0apply for Medicaid so that they could reach critical prenatal care.<\/li>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">We served\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"10\">1294 clients<\/a>\u00a0in our\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/clinical-services\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/richmond-city\/clinical-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\">Family Planning clinics<\/a>, making sure our neighbors were empowered to make their own choices about when to pursue a pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>What steps can I take? \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">Get connected to medical care and social support before, during, and after a pregnancy. RHHD\u2019s Maternity Navigation can be a great place to ask for help getting started!<\/li>\n<li lang=\"EN-US\">Learn about\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hearher\/maternal-warning-signs\/index.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hearher\/maternal-warning-signs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\">urgent maternal warning signs<\/a>, which could suggest complications during or after a pregnancy.
