All ticks have four pairs of legs as adults and have no antennae. Ticks spread disease by attaching to a host and feeding on its blood. Ticks live in grassy, bushy, or wooded areas. Ticks are common in Virginia and can be active on warm days at all times of the year due to suburbanization, the abundance of deer in suburban forests, climate change, and land development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTick bites can cause a number of potentially serious illnesses,\u201d said Richmond and Henrico Deputy Director Melissa Viray, M.D. \u201cKnowing where ticks live and how to protect yourself and your family can keep outdoor adventures safe and fun this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>RHHD offers the following tips to help you <u><a id=\"OWA239ddf89-cdb6-1b6c-7ac1-c67643c9e74c\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96087956 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/ticks\/prevention\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/ticks\/prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">stay safe<\/a><\/u> from tick-related illness during the summer months.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Prepare your clothing a few days before going outside in grassy, bushy, or wooded areas where ticks are common.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Treat clothing ahead of time with permethrin.<\/b> This treatment with will last on clothing, socks, and shoes for several months. Dried permethrin spray will remain active after several washes. Be sure to apply it to clothing a few days before use to allow for proper drying. Do not wear clothing that is still wet from permethrin spray. Ticks will die before they can bite you if they come in contact with permethrin-coated shoes, socks and pants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Tuck your pants into your socks, especially if you\u2019re headed into a grassy or forested area. <\/b>Forcing ticks to climb up the outside of your clothing will help you spot and remove ticks before they can reach your upper body. <b>Use an <\/b><b><u><a id=\"OWAfce67fed-c530-ee28-a398-e05acc5dc7f7\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96087956 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/insect-repellents\/find-repellent-right-you\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/insect-repellents\/find-repellent-right-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">EPA-registered insect repellent<\/a><\/u><\/b><b> on your skin.<\/b> If you\u2019re adventuring with kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics <u><a id=\"OWA35f84543-3730-4e4c-9ec8-cf35d15314d1\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96087956 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/patient-care\/environmental-health\/promoting-healthy-environments-for-children\/insect-repellents\/?srsltid=AfmBOopWGsuGPDE7sViowwrKgczSmW_aqSN7ZQYZHtDzeINsYft0v8_c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/patient-care\/environmental-health\/promoting-healthy-environments-for-children\/insect-repellents\/?srsltid=AfmBOopWGsuGPDE7sViowwrKgczSmW_aqSN7ZQYZHtDzeINsYft0v8_c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">recommends<\/a><\/u> that their insect repellent contains no more than 30% DEET.\n<ul>\n<li>When outdoors in forested tick habitats, use insect repellent containing either DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, 2-undecanone, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on skin or clothing. Always follow instructions on the product label.<\/li>\n<li>Oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol should never be used for children under three years of age.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use insect repellent on babies under two months old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Make tick checks a habit.<\/b> Once you\u2019re indoors, inspect your clothing and body for ticks. Make sure to inspect children\u2019s clothing and bodies if they cannot do so themselves. Inspect gear and pets as well. Tumble dry clothing on high heat for 10 minutes to kill any remaining ticks.\n<ul>\n<li><b>Use a mirror, friend, partner, or spouse to help check your body for ticks. <\/b>Remember to check in armpits, groin area, in and around ears and hairline, belly button, backs of knees, and between legs.<\/li>\n<li><b>Remove ticks the right way.<\/b> If you find a tick, use tweezers and grip the insect as close to your skin as possible. Pull directly up with steady, even pressure until the tick releases. Do not \u201csquish\u201d the tick. Clean the area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Save the tick in a bag or container with rubbing alcohol for identification in case an illness develops in the days to weeks following a tick bite.<\/li>\n<li><b>Identify the tick.<\/b> Use the <u><a id=\"OWAc517c64a-686d-68f8-1763-8d7fa63e1309\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW96087956 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/04\/Digital-Tick-Identification-Chart.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/04\/Digital-Tick-Identification-Chart.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">VDH tick identification chart<\/a><\/u> to identify the tick that bit you.
