It kills almost any mammal or human that gets sick from it. The rabies virus lives mainly in the saliva and brain of rabid animals. The virus can be transmitted through a bite or by getting saliva or central nervous system tissue in a wound or in the eye or mouth. Transmission can occur with direct contact between a human and a rabid animal, or between a pet and a rabid animal<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Steps to prevent the spread of rabies:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a licensed veterinarian vaccinate dogs and cats four months of age and older for rabies, as required by the <u><a id=\"OWAf2dc5977-0c99-afce-2908-32324125360f\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW222646460 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/title3.2\/chapter65\/section3.2-6521\/\" href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/title3.2\/chapter65\/section3.2-6521\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">Code of Virginia<\/a><\/u>.\n<ul>\n<li>Keep vaccinations current.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Not every rabid animal looks sick\n<ul>\n<li>Do not feed stray animals.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid wild animals and pets you are not familiar with, especially raccoons, bats, foxes, and skunks.<\/li>\n<li>Ask the owner before approaching an unfamiliar dog.<\/li>\n<li>Feed your pets indoors and do not let them wander.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Teach children to avoid contact with wild animals and pets they are not familiar with.\n<ul>\n<li>Teach children to ask the owner before approaching an unfamiliar href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/prevention\/bats.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/exposure\/animals\/bats.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">bats<\/a><\/u>, out of homes by capping chimneys with screens and blocking openings in attics, cellars and porches.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure trash cans have tight-fitting lids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>If you, a family member, or a pet are bitten by a wild, stray, or unvaccinated animal,\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call 911 for medical emergencies.<\/li>\n<li>Wash the wound(s) thoroughly with warm soapy water.<\/li>\n<li>If it can be done without risking further direct contact, try to capture the animal under a large box or can, or at least identify it before it runs or flies away.<\/li>\n<li>Contact local animal control, your healthcare provider, or RHHD.\n<ul>\n<li><u><a id=\"OWAaf411f4b-e2eb-dfeb-8173-06111eeee876\" notify your family doctor immediately and explain how you got the bite.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">\n<p>If necessary, your doctor will give you <u><a id=\"OWAa9818939-19e3-a129-d3e0-71c1a9b4ff37\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW222646460 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/hcp\/clinical-care\/post-exposure-prophylaxis.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rabies\/hcp\/clinical-care\/post-exposure-prophylaxis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"7\">rabies post-exposure prophylaxis<\/a><\/u> (PEP) or refer you to an Emergency Department for treatment.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">This treatment generally includes wound care, human rabies, immune globulin (HRIG) and a four-dose vaccine series.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div role=\"presentation\">Your doctor will also treat you for other possible infections that could be caused by
