This test can be completed at home or at a doctor\u2019s office.\u00a0Insurance plans will\u00a0be required\u00a0to cover the full cost of self-collected HPV screenings by Jan. 1, 2027, with no cost the Cochrane Library, the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0HPV vaccination:<\/span><span and 2023\u00a0indicated\u00a0a 12 percent per year decline (overall, 65 percent reduction) in cervical cancer incidence from 2012 to 2019 among US women younger than 25 years who\u00a0likely\u00a0benefited\u00a0from HPV vaccination.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A new nationwide cohort<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(25)00297-X\/fulltext\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from Sweden suggests that widespread HPV vaccination could\u00a0substantially reduce\u00a0the risk of precancerous lesions even among people who never received the is\u00a0required\u00a0for all students, regardless of sex, prior to entry into 7<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0grade.<\/span><span years of age is based on shared clinical decision making.<\/span><span href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/datamanagement\/hpv\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to data from VDH<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of Jan.\u00a013, 2026, 74.1 percent of 13-year-olds in Richmond City and 73.3\u00a0percent of 13-year-olds in Henrico County have\u00a0received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine series.\u00a0Statewide,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">76 percent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">13-year-olds\u00a0have\u00a0received\u00a0least one dose\u00a0of the HPV vaccine series.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As of Jan.\u00a013, 2026, 47.4\u00a0percent of 18-year-olds in Richmond City and 70.4\u00a0percent of 18-year-olds in Henrico County have\u00a0received the complete HPV vaccine series.\u00a0Statewide,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">62.7\u00a0percent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of 18-year-olds have\u00a0received\u00a0the complete HPV vaccine series.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">HPV\u00a0and Cervical Cancer\u00a0Data<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data from\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/hpv\/cases.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0HPV causes six\u00a0different kinds\u00a0of cancer, including almost all (91\u00a0percent) of\u00a0cervical cancers. HPV also causes 70\u00a0percent\u00a0of head and neck (oropharyngeal) cancers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/statecancerprofiles.cancer.gov\/quick-profiles\/index.php?statename=virginia\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">National Cancer Institute\u2019s State Cancer Profile<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the rate of new cases of cervical cancer in Virginia has been decreasing steadily from 2017 to 2021. The rates of new cases in Richmond and Henrico were\u00a0somewhat lower\u00a0than the rate in Virginia during the same\u00a0time period.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Screening and Care for Cervical Cancer<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The\u00a0Virginia Department of Health (VDH) offers\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/every-womans-life\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Every Woman\u2019s Life<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(EWL), a public health program that\u202fhelps uninsured, income-eligible women gain access to free breast and cervical cancer screening services. Screening and early detection reduce death rates, improve treatment options, and\u00a0greatly increase\u00a0rates\u00a0of\u00a0survival. If a woman enrolled in EWL is diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer she may be eligible for Medicaid to pay for treatment.\u00a0Community members\u00a0can use this link to find a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/every-womans-life\/find-a-screening-program-near-you\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">EWL provider<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0near them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To be eligible for EWL, a woman must be\u202fa Virginia resident\u202fbetween the\u202fages of 18-64,\u202fmeet federal income guidelines and be uninsured.
