Visit CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/page\/zika-information\">Zika travel information<\/a> page for a map showing areas where Zika is a risk. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Understanding testing for Zika virus infection during pregnancy:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you are pregnant, you should tell your doctor or other health care provider if you recently traveled to an area with risk of Zika or had sex without a condom with someone who lives in or recently traveled to an area with risk of Zika. If you develop symptoms of Zika (fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes or muscle pain), your health care provider may order blood or urine tests to look for Zika or other viruses like dengue or chikungunya. Recognizing that Zika virus is a cause of certain birth defects does not mean that every pregnant woman infected with Zika will have a baby with a birth defect. It means that infection with Zika during pregnancy increases the chances for these problems. Scientists continue to study how Zika virus affects mothers and their children to better understand the full range of potential health problems that Zika virus during pregnancy may cause.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Zika and Microcephaly:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/microcephaly.html\">microcephaly<\/a>. During pregnancy, a baby\u2019s head grows because the baby\u2019s brain grows. Microcephaly can occur because a baby\u2019s brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/zika\/family\/documents\/WhattoKnow-Doctor-Suspects-Microcephaly.pdf\">What to know: If your doctor suspects microcephaly<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/zika\/family\/documents\/WhattoKnow-Affected-By-Zika-No-Related-Conditions.pdf\">What to know: If your baby may have been affected by Zika, but has no related health conditions at birth<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/zika\/family\/documents\/WhattoKnow-Congenital-Zika-Syndrome.pdf\">What to know: If your baby was born with congenital Zika syndrome<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Congenital Zika Syndrome:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Congenital Zika Syndrome is a pattern of birth defects found among fetuses and babies infected with Zika virus during pregnancy. It is described by the following features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smaller than expected head size, called microcephaly<\/li>\n<li>Problems with brain development<\/li>\n<li>Feeding problems, such as difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<li>Hearing loss<\/li>\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n<li>Vision problems<\/li>\n<li>A problem with joint movement, called contractures<\/li>\n<li>Too much muscle tone restricting body movement soon after birth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Zika and the Asymptomatic Infant: <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We do not yet know all of the ways Zika virus infection during pregnancy might affect a baby, including problems that may not be obvious when a baby is born. Because we are still learning about the long-term effects of Zika virus infection during pregnancy, <strong>it is important for you and your doctor to monitor your baby\u2019s development throughout your baby\u2019s entire first year.<\/strong> Tracking your baby\u2019s development will help to identify any problems early and help manage infant medical care.<\/p>\n<p>Track your baby\u2019s development through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/actearly\/milestones\/milestones-in-action.html\">CDC\u2019s \u201cLearn the Signs.
