{"id":12,"date":"2016-12-31T19:56:09","date_gmt":"2016-12-31T19:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/wic-dietetic-internship\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2026-09-14T18:03:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T18:03:21","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/wic-dietetic-internship\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-12\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-12-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-12-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-12-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2 style=\"padding-bottom: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;\">Eligibility<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong>Updated Eligibility \u2013 VA\/MD\/DC WIC Dietetic Internship<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">\n<li>Employment Requirement \u2014 Applicants must be currently employed by VA, MD, or DC WIC.\n<ul>\n<li>VA WIC: Minimum 12 months of employment prior to application<\/li>\n<li>MD WIC: Minimum 12 months of employment prior to application<\/li>\n<li>DC WIC: Minimum 12 months of employment prior to application<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Graduate Degree \u2014 A graduate degree is required prior to the start of the internship.<\/li>\n<li>DPD Verification or Intent \u2014 Applicants must have:\n<ul>\n<li>A DPD Verification Statement or an Intent to Complete form from an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics.<\/li>\n<li>Issued within five years of the internship start date.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants whose DPD was completed more than five years ago may still be eligible if they meet the program's Recency of Education Policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong>Recency of Education Policy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\">Applicants whose DPD Verification Statement or Intent to Complete is older than five years (but within 10 years) may still be eligible if they meet the program's recency requirements:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">\n<li>Completion or current enrollment in a 3 credit Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) course<\/li>\n<li>Coursework must be completed within five years of the internship start date<\/li>\n<li>Coursework must be taken at a university with an ACEND accredited DPD<\/li>\n<li>A grade of B or better is required, with documentation submitted before internship start<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Applicants whose DPD Verification Statement or Intent to Complete is older than ten years may still be eligible if they meet the program's recency requirements:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">\n<li>Completion or current enrollment in a 3 credit Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) course<\/li>\n<li>Completion or current enrollment in one additional upper level dietetics course (minimum 3 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Coursework must be completed within five years of the internship start date<\/li>\n<li>Coursework must be taken at a university with an ACEND accredited DPD<\/li>\n<li>A grade of B or better is required, with documentation submitted before internship start<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Internship Director in advance to confirm coursework acceptability. Completion of recency coursework does not guarantee acceptance.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">\n<li>Match Status \u2014 The VA\/MD\/DC WIC Dietetic Internship does not participate in the national match.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"padding-bottom: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;\">Internship<\/h2>\n<ul style=\"padding-top: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\">\n<li>One internship class per year, 8 internship slots per class<\/li>\n<li>Internship begins in October and ends in August the following year, consisting of 1000 hours of supervised practice<\/li>\n<li>42 weeks (9.5 months)<\/li>\n<li>Two full time rotations: Clinical and Foodservice<\/li>\n<li>Various part time community rotations, the remaining part time status will be working at your local WIC agency.<\/li>\n<li>Full time VDH interns granted educational leave to participate in the program.<\/li>\n<li>Full time VA, MD and DC interns receive full salary and benefits during the internship<\/li>\n<li>Being granted educational leave requires the VA\/MD\/DC Dietetic Internship graduate to:\n<ul class=\"list\">\n<li>Take the RD exam within 6 months of program completion<\/li>\n<li>Pass the RD exam within 12 months of program completion<\/li>\n<li>Internship graduates must continue employment upon successful completion of the RD exam. VA graduates must work 18 months full time, MD and DC graduates must work 24 months full time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Interns complete rotations within their community or geographic region of Virginia, Maryland, or Washington DC. However, interns will be expected to travel outside their regions to available rotations when necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Internship Orientation is held in Richmond, VA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"padding-bottom: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;\">Distance Technology Requirements<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; margin-top: 0px;\">Interns enrolled in the VA\/MD\/DC WIC Dietetic Internship must have access to a reliable desktop or laptop computer (or tablet) with a stable internet connection. Devices must include a working webcam and microphone, as virtual components are integrated throughout the program. Interns will use Microsoft SharePoint, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams to access materials, complete assignments, and participate in group class days. Proficiency in using computers, internet browsers, Microsoft Office (especially Word), and common applications is required. Requests should be directed to the Internship Director and may take up to 30 days to be processed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"padding-bottom: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;\"><strong>Prospective Interns<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; margin-top: 0px; font-weight: 400;\">Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master\u2019s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In order to be approved for registration examination eligibility with a bachelor\u2019s degree, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR's Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before\u00a0<strong>12:00 midnight Central Time, December 31, 2023<\/strong>. For more information about this requirement, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdrnet.org\/graduatedegree\">CDR's website.<\/a> In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship at the VA\/MD WIC Dietetic Internship Program are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN once a master\u2019s degree is obtained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice (Virginia does not require licensure). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdrnet.org\/state-licensure\">Learn more about state licensure requirements.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/acend\/students-and-advancing-education\/information-for-students\">Learn more about educational pathways<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/acend\/students-and-advancing-education\/information-for-students\"> to become a RDN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Information about the requirements and process to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN):<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile state interpretations of statutes may vary, it is ACEND's considered opinion that the program meets the educational requirements for dietetics licensure and certification in all states. However, completing an ACEND-accredited academic program alone does not qualify an individual for licensure or certification as a dietitian in any state.
