Virginia Deparment of Health Urges Virginians to Get the Flu Vaccine

Although flu activity remains low nationally, Virginia has started to see sporadic reports of the influenza virus detected in recent weeks. December is not too late to get your flu vaccine! While the flu season may vary from year to year, cases often peak in January or February and continue through May.

A flu vaccine is needed every season for two reasons:

  • First, the body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection.
  • Second, because flu viruses are constantly changing, the formulation of the flu vaccine is reviewed each year and updated to keep up with changing flu viruses.

To minimize your risk of contracting or transmitting the flu, follow these simple steps:

  • Get vaccinated;
  • Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, for at least 20 seconds;
  • Cover your cough, either by using a disposable tissue or coughing into your sleeve, not your hand; and
  • Stay at home when you are sick.

Visit www.vaccines.gov/find-vaccines/ to find a location near you to get the flu vaccine. It is safe to get both the flu and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time.

World AIDS Day 2021
December 1 is World AIDS Day. It was founded in 1988 to raise awareness and fight to end the HIV epidemic.

Established in 1988, December 1 is known as World AIDS Day.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) FACTS:

  • HIV infections decreased by eight percent from 2015 to 2019 in the U.S.
  • Virginia, in 2017, had the 17th highest rate of HIV diagnosis in the U.S. and was 13th in the country of newly reported cases. (1)
  • In 2019, the most recent year for available data, 1.2 million people had HIV in the U.S. (2)
  • Of the 1.2 million, 13-percent or 156,000 did not know they were infected and needed testing.

KNOW YOUR STATUS

  • Getting tested is the only way to know your HIV status.
  • Treatment of HIV can stop the progression of the virus that targets and damages the immune system.
  • Without treatment, HIV, in most people, will progress to AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
  • AIDS, the advanced stage of HIV, can lead to death.
  • There is no cure for HIV and AIDS.

 HOW HIV SPREADS

  • A person can contract HIV through sex and sharing needles.
  • It can be passed from person to person through semen, vaginal fluids, or infected blood.

 HIV POPULATION IMPACT

  • HIV disproportionately impacts minorities, bisexuals and men who have sex with men. (3)

This Thanksgiving: How to Avoid Foodborne Illness

To help avoid foodborne illness on Thursday, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has some food safety tips. Foodborne illness is often referred to as food poisoning.

Avoid Unsafe Food Handling

  • Do not rinse a raw turkey since doing so can spread bacteria, thereby cross-contaminating other foods and surfaces. The water can splash bacteria up to three feet away.1
  • The only way to kill bacteria is to cook a raw turkey to a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees. It is essential to use a food thermometer since you cannot smell, see or feel bacteria on poultry.2
  • Food Thermometer — Temperature Test your Turkey in Three Places:
    • Thickest part of the breast
    • Innermost part of the wing
    • Innermost part of the thigh
    • Undercooked food can cause serious foodborne illness
  • Before cooking, make sure to clean and sanitize food preparation surfaces and utensils. During food preparation, wash your hands often.

Proper Handwashing

  • Proper handwashing is a big step to protecting those around your Thanksgiving table.
  • A person should scrub their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds as required to remove germs.

Have Questions on Preparing Turkey Dinner?

Talk to Food Safety Experts

  • Call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854). Live food safety experts are available in English and Spanish.
  • Chat live with a USDA expert at usda.gov
  • USDA Experts available by phone and live chat:
    • Monday thru Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m
    • Thanksgiving Day, the Meat and Poultry Hotline is open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • No live chat on Thanksgiving Day

The Prince William Health District What You Should Know: Recommendation of Booster Doses for All Adults 18+

On November 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that all adults 18 years of age and older are now eligible to get a booster shot.

• This follows authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of boosters for all adults who completed a two-dose initial vaccine series of either Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech.

• Previously, a booster was recommended at least six months after
completion of the initial series of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine for those populations who are 65 years of age and older, those living in long-term care facilities, and those 18 years of age and up who are at increased risk due to underlying medical conditions or where they work or live.

• Now, any adult, 18 years and older, who is six months or more out from the second Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna dose can request and receive a booster dose.

• CDC continues to recommend that people aged 18 years or older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine receive a booster dose at least two months after being vaccinated.

• With the CDC’s action, approximately 2.2 million Virginians are now eligible to receive a booster dose.

• Those who are unvaccinated remain at the highest risk of severe illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19. This population remains VDH’s top priority. Everyone five years or older is eligible to be vaccinated.

Prince William Health District What You Should Know: Important Reminders To Stay Safe This Holiday Season

As the fall and winter holidays approach, friends and extended families will be getting together across the region and traveling throughout the United States and globally. With more people spending time indoors with others as cold weather sets in, public health leaders encourage everyone to maintain their layered prevention activities, which may include:

  • Get all eligible members of your family fully vaccinated, including booster shots, if appropriate.
  • Wear a mask indoors when around those not in your household.
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Socially distance – stay six feet from others as much as possible.
  • Avoid crowded and indoor areas where distancing is not possible or where you will be in close contact with those whose vaccination status is unknown.
  • If you think you may have COVID-19 or may have been exposed, get tested and follow guidelines for isolation and quarantine.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. This will help prevent many diseases, including the seasonal flu.
  • If you are not fully vaccinated, stay away from others and get tested 3-5 days after returning home from travel.

We know from experience that the COVID-19 virus continues to threaten our community, that surges in COVID-19 and flu cases this fall and winter season are likely, and that continued use of mitigation strategies works to keep all of us safer against both viruses.

The Prince William Health District What You Should Know: COVID-19 Vaccines are Safe and Effective

  •  Millions of people in the United States have received COVID-19 vaccines under the most intense safety monitoring in U.S. history.

  • At this time the CDC recommends everyone 12 years and older get vaccinated as soon as possible to help protect against COVID-19 and the related, potentially severe complications that can occur.

  • CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal agencies are monitoring the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.

  • Reports of adverse events to Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) following vaccination, including deaths, do not necessarily mean that a vaccine caused a health problem.

  • Reports of death after COVID-19 vaccination are rare. More than 414 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through October 25, 2021. During this time, VAERS received 9,143 reports of death (0.0022%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine. This does not mean the death was related to the vaccine.  FDA requires healthcare providers to report any death after COVID-19 vaccination to VAERS, even if it’s unclear whether the vaccine was the cause.
